Melody's POV
"Melody! Your dad wants everyone in the living room now!" Colin shouted through my door, aggressively banging on it at the same time.
"Coming!" I called to my best friend. Colin and I had been best buds since we were twelve, during our 'other' puberty. His family joined our pack and we just... clicked. He presented as an Omega, and since everyone had just accepted that I had presented as a pup as an Omega, nobody questioned why were we together all the time. But at times like this, I wish he'd just leave me to finish my three-hour nap. I groaned, dragging myself out of bed and glanced in the mirror, fixing my hair enough so that it looked decent before making my way downstairs where the rest of the stragglers headed.
"Sorry to disturb you all, but I have made a decision. In two days, our pack with be joining the Lycus pack from Paris, France, and the Rogers pack from New York, United States. This is to ensure peace between the packs and to see if any Mated pairs can be found. Any questions?"
"Where will we be going to join these packs?" Leo, another puppyhood friend asked.
"A remote estate in Maine, in the U.S," Dad smiled.
"Do the already Mated pairs have to go?" Alex, the second-in-command asked.
"Yes. I want the pack all together. This isn't just about Mates, Alex. This is about making connections so that we have friends in other countries if needed."
"It seems unfair that the Lycus pack and our pack have to travel so far while the Rogers pack doesn't. Why is that?" Lena, Leo's twin sister, and Alex's Mate asked.
"The Alphas agreed that being in the U.S. was the best idea, and Maine is the vacation state and there are plenty of estates to rent. This makes it neutral ground, so no pack has any power over the others. Any other questions?"
"How long are we staying, Dad?" I asked.
"A week," He smiled, "Now go pack." The pack dispersed and Colin followed me to my room.
"Did you know about this?" He asked once we got to my room.
"Of course I did. I was there when Dad was on the phone," I said, rummaging through my closet and picking out outfits.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"It was his decision. He's Alpha, Colin."
"Yeah, but-"
"No buts. He is our Alpha, Colin," I spoke slowly and he got the hint.
"You're not bringing that, are you?" He asked, changing the subject. I looked at my sarcastic teeshirt and my printed leggings.
"What's wrong with it?" I asked, huffing.
"It's just that, this is a peace event and that shirt is passive-aggressive..."
"All my shirts are passive-aggressive. Would you rather I brought the shirt that says 'If Karma won't slap you, I will'? Come on Colin."
"Fine, but I still think 'Sarcasm: One of the many services I offer' is a bit much... What about your 'professional bookworm' shirt? That makes you seem sweet and nerdy."
"I'm nerdy, but I'm sure as Hell not sweet. Omega is just a title, Colin. Although, I am going to bring that shirt. I love that shirt."
"Do you think you're going to find your Mate?" Colin asked, the literal embodiment of the heart-eyes Emoji.
"No, I don't. The likelihood that I'm going to find my Mate based on an arranged meeting of two other packs is so low that it's practically nonexistent. Do you think you're going to find your Mate?"
"I hope so. I hope he's a couple of inches taller than me, slightly buff, green eyes, and light brown hair," Colin sighed, content in his daydream.
"Can I be the flower girl?" I sniggered and he huffed, throwing a pillow at me.
"Shut up! It could happen," He growled at me. "Why are you packing anyway? We don't leave for a couple of days."
"Because it calms my anxiety. And so I know what I can and can't wear the days leading up to leaving," I answered. "Now go pack!" I lunged at him and he ran out of my room, laughing hysterically.
The Night Before They Left
Melody's POV
I laid in bed, scrolling through my phone, just waiting to fall asleep. It was only 9:30 and the rest of the pack was still up, but all I wanted was to sleep. Granted, sleep did not want me.
"Melody?" A soft voice said, breaking my thoughts.
"Colin? What are you doing?"
"Can I sleep in your room tonight?"
"Sure. You wanna be the big spoon or the little spoon?"
"Big spoon, please," He answered.
"Come on then," I said, making room behind me for him to slip into.
"Were the Beta's being assholes again?" I asked after a few moments of silence.
"Yes..."
"Want me to set 'em straight?"
"Not tonight. I just want to hold you. You love me no matter what right?"
"Of course I do. You're my best friend, and I absolutely adore you, just the way you are. Don't change who you are because of the asshole Beta's, change who you are because you want to change. Do I make myself clear?" I said, putting my phone on the charger and turning in his arms to face him.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Good."
"Do you really think it's unlikely that any of us will meet our Mates this week?"
"I'm sure some of us will, but I doubt I will. There's just too much baggage, ya'know?"
"Do you really think so low of yourself, Melody?"
"Colin, you have to admit, my situation is a lot to take in..."
"That doesn't mean you don't have a Mate. He or she is out there right now, and maybe you'll meet him or her tomorrow. But you can't give up hope, Melody. You're one of the best people I know; anyone would be lucky to be Mated to you."
"Except you. I'm not a couple of inches taller than you, I'm not slightly buff, I don't have green eyes or light brown hair. I'm a redhead who's an inch shorter than you who's just chubby enough so you know I eat too much and my eyes are a weird blue and purple mix with white flecks. And I'm a woman, so there's that..."
"Melody, even I would be lucky to have you as my Mate. Sure, you are not my dream guy physically, or a guy at all but you let me cry without shaming me, you let me decide if I want someone to hold or if I want to be held, you tell me when I'm being too much and you let me be myself and you get mad when I pretend to be something I'm not. Sure, we'd have to get fuck buddies if we were Mated but even I would be lucky to have you as a Mate."
"Thanks, Colin. Now get some sleep. We have a big day tomorrow."
"Yeah. Good night, Melody."
"Good night, Colin."
