Today is my 10th birthday, which is the most important one yet because it's double digits. Mum's having a good day today so far, so she said that she'll bake me a birthday cake. I'll be helping her with the decorations, which will probably just be a great attempt at covering up all of the burnt bits.
Here is a list of all of the presents I got:
1. A book about doctor who (my favourite tv show of all time)
2. A new Wii game
3. Some cool socks with astronauts on them
4. 10 curly wurly chocolate bars because they're my favourite chocolate in the world and each year my mum gets me the amount which matches my birthday year. It's a Saturday, which means no school! Matilda is out shopping with her friends, which is what she usually does these days and if its not shopping, its going to the cinema or if its not going to the cinema its hanging out at the park.
She does a lot of this hanging out stuff and seems to have quite a lot of friends which I've never been able to do.
There is one exception though and his name is Tom. He's in the same class as I am and last week I invited him over to play Mario Cart. I beat him like three times in a row on rainbow road, which is the hardest level in the game and, because the road itself is made out rainbows, it's really quite easy to just drive straight off the edge and fall into oblivion like a hamster, which has little to no depth perception and terribly bad eyesight, so when placed at a height, has no idea about the certain doom that awaits it below.
Anyway, Tom didn't seem to mind one a bit and was far too busy enjoying the wonderful views of space (yes, a rainbow in space).
It's a very gloomy day today and has been raining all morning, as if the weather doesn't have the slightest clue that it's my birthday. Mum lit some candles earlier, which make the most comforting of crackling sounds in the background and have filled up the room with a warm, sweet scent.
Sitting on the ledge by the big window which looks out on to our street, I watch a great many people passing by. I do this quite often, which annoys mum because she says I look like a dog waiting for it's owner to come home.
Some of the people have quite clearly thought ahead and brought their umbrellas for protection against the rain and others just quick-walk all the way home so they can avoid, best they can, getting completely soaked to the bone.
One particular man catches my eye because he has the most amazing thick brown moustache which is slightly curled up at the ends. He's carrying a big brown briefcase which has a white label attached to the top near the handle. He's in the group of prepared people who have brought an umbrella and his is dark green with a a wonderful elephant pattern. To me, he looks like what you might imagine a human version of an elephant would look like. He is extremely tall and has grey- looking skin and a big fat belly. I shall call him the elephant man.
The elephant man crosses the street and looks as if he is coming towards the house.
He IS coming towards the house.
''Mum! There's an elephant man coming towards the house!'' I say and she calls back from the kitchen ''well tell him politely to come another day because we've got to get on with your cake!''
There is a knock at the door, three times.
I start to slowly sneak towards the door as quiet as a mouse so that he can't hear me coming and when I finally get there I go up on my tip toes, stretching as high as I can up and up until I reach the small little hole in the door that you can look out of and take a peak at whoever is on the other side. This is my second favourite looking spot after the living room window and is very handy for keeping a look out for any unwanted bad guys who might, at any moment, want to break in and attack us.
