The place Tanjirou carried me to was a beautiful pond shrouded by layers of wild hydrangea flowers. The blue and red intermixed hydrangeas sparkled and reflected off the blue moonlight, and a thin mist hovered over the water as if to protect the fairies living in the pond.
"Here."
He softly put me down right in front of the water, where the view encompassed every silky blossom of flower. I looked up at him—soon, he sat down beside me as well.
"Tanjirou...." I didn't know what to say. I knew I had to talk to him, but I hadn't thought this through—I'm so stupid!
"Zenitsu, I'm sorry." Tanjirou suddenly said.
"What?"
"I'm sorry for yelling at you, and saying such horrible things." Tanjirou's eyes seemed like a well of sadness, where his emotions were constantly spilling out. I wanted to stop him from making that expression, so I said in a rather cheerful way:
"Oh, darn it. I wanted to say that first!"
"Huh?" Tanjirou turned to me with curious eyes.
"I wanted to say I'm sorry because I said such bad self-deprecating words."
"No, but I...."
"No no no! I was definitely wrong, no—actually we were both wrong, so let's not blame ourselves anymore. Okay? That's settled? Settled! Good. Now let's talk about something else."
"You're...forgiving me?" Tanjirou's eyes got watery as he asked me. Looking at his face, I felt something welling up inside me as well.
"Of course, you stupid. I am. I don't even know if I have the right to forgive you, but yes. If that's what you want."
"Ha....." Tanjirou seemed to relax his muscles; the nervousness that was slithering all over his body was loosening its grip.
"Thank you for bringing me here. This scenery is really nice." I said, trying to relax him more. I could hear Tanjirou's steadied breath as he recovered from all that running while holding me.
"I knew this place before, but I recently heard from someone that hydrangea flowers are a sign of apology or gratitude in Japan, because an emperor gave them as apologies to his maidens."
"Really? Didn't know that...."
"l wanted to properly apologize for you, so...here."
Tanjirou held out a flower bundle to me with both hands. It was a bouquet of watery, misty, dreamy hydrangea flowers.
"I'm sorry, Zenitsu. And I love you. Thank you for everything."
