A warm gust of wind wafts through my hair, bringing the smell of spices and curry from the nearby restaurant. I close my eyes and inhale. The city is different from up here. I can see all the lights from distant cars down below me. I can hear them honking loudly, and I can catch faint tunes from their radios far below.
I wonder what it's like to have no worries, to live carefree.
Today's day four of me coming up here, up onto the roof of this seven-story building. I shouldn't be here. If I'm caught, I could get in major trouble.
But I don't care.
I see a little girl run across the sidewalk right below me, following a barking dog. She seems happy. I give a small smile. Kacchan and I were like that, once. Innocent and happy.
The girl looks up. I take a step backward so she doesn't see me standing on the edge.
I hope she didn't see me.
The next time I look back over, she's gone, running after the dog again.
My mom is expecting me home. I should go. I grab my backpack and walk towards the rusty fire escape that I've been using to get up here. But I can't help glancing back at the edge.
It looks inviting.
But not today.
It's day four.
