Tomioka Giyu never wavers.
At least, that's what he had held true for years.
-
You always did have the most understanding, kind smile to him.
You were a sweet, gentle soul, who always tried to grant mercy to the demons you had slain.
You realized that they were helpless, tragic creatures. You knew they didn't deserve to live, as they had committed grave sins, but they didn't deserve to die painfully, either.
You had even focused years of your life on developing a Breath Style that would give painless deaths to demons no matter what form you chose.
Giyu, however, had always had the opposing opinion. At the start, at least, he believed demons were filthy, impure creatures, monsters that should be sent to Hell as quick as humanly possible. That changed, though.
You always did have that airy, cheerful laugh, one that made the light briefly return to his eyes every time he heard it.
Once Giyu met you, that changed.
You, despite all his flaws, despite his cold disposition, despite his endless attempts for you to back off, continued to patiently interact with him.
Even when he refused to reciprocate the conversation, or walked away, you were patient.
You would tell him about your day. Tell him about the demons you've slain. How sad they seemed, how they were suffering, how you were glad to release them from the Hell they've been caught in. How you were as gentle as you could possibly be when sending them to the next life.
You'd ask him about his day. When you got no response, you would just smile and continue, talking about your little siblings. You'd laugh as you recounted the stories, that laugh that made his stomach feel strange, fluttery, even.
Giyu despised you. Why? Why did you try so hard? Why couldn't he make himself tell you to get away from him, to stay away from him? Why couldn't he warn you, that having someone close was never meant to be for him?
You always did have the brightest, most beautiful eyes. Shimmering eyes, ones that didn't even need the moonlight to light up the area nearby. Only to him.
Eventually, he couldn't take it anymore. He stopped one day as he was walking away from you yet again, and you stopped as well, perplexed by the change in routine.
"You." he spoke, turning. "What's the meaning of all this? Why do you insist on pestering me?"
You looked a bit confused, but soon, processed his question with a gentle smile. Giyu felt his heartbeat pick up, and then, felt it flutter when he met your kind eyes.
"I can tell you've been through so much in your life. From the moment we met, Giyu. Even if you walked away, or ignored me.. I wanted to try and bring some kind of happiness into your life."
Your words struck him like an arrow through the heart.
"I know the feeling of losing someone. I know it all too well." you continued, "And I hoped that, by just simply trying a conversation now and then, by simply offering a smile.. I could ease that pain just a bit, as someone once did for me before."
Giyu gripped the bottom of his haori.
He knew what this feeling was. Barely, but he knew. He knew he had never despised you at all.
Quite the opposite, in fact.
You, and your smile. You, and your laugh. You, and your eyes.
