I sighed, using the bar towel to mop up all the loose drops of beer, water, soda, and alcohol lining the bar, and checked the time on my phone. It was a quarter past nine, which meant I was late, and Jacob and Liam were probably worrying about me, especially since it was pouring outside. I groaned inwardly, as I grabbed my leather jacket, wrapping it around me, and took a deep breath, before walking out into the rain. In seconds, my hair was soaked, and it was hard to see, as I locked up. I swore up a storm, as I realised that I lent Liam my car while his was in the shop, which meant I now had to walk the thirty minutes home in that downpour. I told myself, "Not like you haven't dealt with worse, Liv. Suck it up, be a grown up, and fucking walk home." I started the long walk, my clothes and skin not covered by my jacket soaked, and began thinking about someone else who I had once met in the rain; A girl with fiery hair and a gorgeous smile. I shook my head, swallowing hard, trying to clear away the thoughts, because once I started thinking about her, I couldn't stop, and soon enough, I'd be drowning in alcohol and locking myself in my room for hours. I couldn't do that to Jacob, especially not on his sixth birthday.
I arrived home, and slowly walked up the driveway, slightly confused, as I heard Liam laughing in the living room, followed by a woman's laughter. I couldn't remember him mentioning anything about having one of his associates over, but I shrugged it off, knowing he'd probably forgotten to tell me in his rush to get to work on time that morning. He worked for a record label company that held contracts with bands like Green Day, Metallica, and others, and if he was late to work, he'd be in serious trouble. Still, I couldn't help but feel a bit worried, as I noticed Jacob's bike missing, and the garage door open. I pressed the button by the back door, watching the door slide shut, and then opened the back door, going inside. I made my way to the living room, and saw Liam look at me. He asked, "What kept you, babe?" I sighed, and told him, "Long night. Had three bar fights, and the last guy thought it'd be fun to get me caught between him and his asshole friends. Then, I had to walk home in the rain." He frowned, and asked, "It's raining outside?" I told him,"Yeah, it's pouring, babe. You can't hear that?" I went silent, so he could hear the rain plinking off the roof and windows, and he blinked, before saying, "Oh."
I frowned, getting even more confused, as the blonde, slender, gorgeous woman beside him eyed me with disgust. Instead of punching her in her judgemental face, I went upstairs to the bathroom, and grabbed a towel, using it to dry my hair. I then peeled off my wet clothes, and walked into our bedroom, opening the closet. I pulled out a plain black shirt and ripped jeans, and tugged them on, before heading back downstairs. Halfway down the steps, I froze, my heart shattering into a million pieces, as my mind tried to convince me that what I was seeing wasn't real. I stormed down the rest of the stairs, and glared at Liam. "Really?! I go upstairs for five minutes to change clothes after working my ass off to help pay the bills, and I come back to see you with your dick shoved up her ass?" Liam just shrugged, and zipped up his pants, then stood, and got in my face. He told me, "You're pathetic, Olivia. Some woman broke your heart years ago, and just even the mere mention of her name has you drowning in liquor and pills. You're a horrible girlfriend, and even worse of a mother. You leave Jacob here alone all day, and can't even come home on time for his birthday! You're a piece of shit, Liv! No wonder that woman left you behind! You think you're a badass, but really, you're just a waste of space, and deserve to be left!"
Each word carved a deeper hole into my heart, reopening over and over again the wounds already left there by my ex wife, and I couldn't help but feel that he was right, but still, I had tried time and again to love him, to make myself care about him, and from the pain I felt inside, I knew a part of me had succeeded. I told him, "I had a son with you! I gave you my love, my life, my house! I work my fucking ass off to keep you happy! I go to your lame ass parties, and watch you flirt with plastic bitches like wannabe Barbie over there, but keep my mouth shut! You know why? Because I love you, you motherfucker! And our son loves you! But obviously, you don't love him!" I wasn't prepared for his fist to collide with my face, and I was sent flying backwards onto our glass coffee table, shattering the glass top of it. Shards sliced into my skin, and as I went to get up, Liam climbed on top of me, and pinned me down. He shouted, "You're a fucking bitch, Liv! No one loves you, and no one needs you! You're nothing!" With every word, his fist collided with my face, and various other parts of my body, and then, his hand closed around my throat. His other girlfriend apparently realised he was going too far when she tugged on his arm, trying to get him to let go. "Come on, baby, let her go. You've done enough..Let go, Liam!" Eventually, he let go of me, and I sucked in blissful air, coughing.
