Zyrite's pitiful sleep was interrupted by the sensation of a soft hand violently shaking him. Twisting and turning in an attempt to escape this strange experience, he finally jolted awake as the mitten lifted him into the air. Reverie held him between her thumb and index finger as she squinted into his eyes. "What did you do to me, cube boy?"
"Wha-?"
"What kind of booze did you put in my coffee?!"
"I didn't-" Then, deciding it would be wise to deflect the conversation, he asked her the most random question he could muster. "Say, do you turn pink when you're tipsy?"
"Do you turn pink when a lady punches you in the face?"
"Ah, so you're a lady now."
"And you're not short anymore!"
"Very funny..." Then, realizing how heated their argument had become, he whispered, "You know what, let's end this back-and-forth before we chatwall this city."
The taller of the two winced. "Sure, I guess. What's your name, booze cube?"
Zyrite grinned. "Zyrite's the name. Zyrite Cringe." Descending into slow laughter, he melted into giggles. Reverie glared at him, perhaps annoyed that he stole her signature move. Rolling around in intense humor, he snapped back to reality when his lady friend picked him up and threw him against the wall.
"Ow." Looking at the girl, he decided he needed to make peace with her if he wanted to get anywhere. Plus, more than anything, he wanted a friend to share laughs with. He'd only had his sister before. "Wanna... go get ice cream?"
"Look man, I'm not switching gears that fast."
"Just a cone or two... it'll be chocolate flavor! Maybe even coffee!"
"Oh, dear Zee, I see you know of my weakness..." She ran her hand through her hair. "I swear, if we get there and there's no coffee flavor, I'm out."
...
Indeed, there was coffee flavor.
As they sat at the small table, she looked around at the warm, peaceful shop. Licking her caffeinated dessert, she smiled, seemingly calm. Then it all vanished, and she was glaring again. "I didn't like what you called me," she muttered. As Zyrite looked at her in confusion, she continued. "You called me a 'Robotic' back there. When we first met. I barely heard it, but... you said it." Her eyes darkened menacingly. "Why would you call me that? Just because I have thrusters on my feet? Ha, what a lame excuse."
The cube shriveled under her gaze, a behavior we all know of. It was the sort of withering that occurs when one is called out for a minor annoyance. A minor mistake. "I didn't mean to."
"You didn't mean to? Then why did you say it? Honestly, the guys running that HERO you worship, they're human too."
Zyrite froze. "What?"
Reverie narrowed her eyes. "Oh, you didn't know? HERO isn't a deity. It's an organization. The Humanoid Extermination and Research Organization, in fact."
He was at a loss for words. But considering his friend was serious, he had to believe her. "Tell me more."
She scoffed. "Sure. The Organization was created during the Humanoid Rebellion. Its founder and his army ravaged the streets, capturing test subjects and extracting the energy from their souls. Last I heard, Subject 8055 was a success. And then, well... they created soldiers out of the essence. They created your species." Changing the topic, she added, "Speaking of species... I hated the way you used that word. Robotic. As if it was a bad thing!"
"They're evil, Rev!"
"Are they? If Professor Etch taught me anything, it was to see all points of view. To see our world as the slaves did, not as the rich and powerful did. That's what they were. Slaves. Now, they're trying to fight our injustice, and we want to destroy them. It makes me sick..."
The cube fell into a painful silence. Did she have a point? His memories snapped back to TeleVytal and its message. I fight for my life. No, no, no! It was wrong! He barely heard himself hiss, "Agree to disagree."
The human sighed tiredly, looking away. Zyrite imagined he saw her eyes flicker blue for a second, before he reminded himself that the Lil' TV was dead. However, Reverie's next words scared him more than any boss could.
"This is why we can't be friends." Such a tiny sentence, yet it made him feel immediately alone. "Do you know what you put me through? I just talk to you, and then I find myself sitting on a random bench! And everyone says I was just taking a stroll around the city! I was scared! I'm still scared! And suddenly, I feel the ground shaking, and there are all these noises coming from below the street?"
All traces of fury faded from his face. He didn't know what to say to her. Looking down at the floor, he could only let her continue. "So yeah, we can't be friends. Don't talk to me again."
Rising from her seat, she left the shop and silently walked away.
