Until then

“What are you planning to watch?”

“Hotarubi no Mori e.”

“Which anime movie, again?”

“The one where a kid grows up visiting a spirit every summer.”

“Girl, I hate that movie. With guts.”

“Man, why? Because that friend of yours dressed up as Gin for Halloween and he outdid your costume?”

“What? This ain't about him, wha—”

“Because when I tricked you into watching it with me that one time, you ended up crying your ugly ass out?”

“No. I hate that I got hurt by the ending despite knowing where the movie would eventually take turns.”

“Oh, so you still have feelings.”

“Excuse you, I'm a human being too. Men have feelings too.”

“Which means you don't get to hate one of your roommate's favorite movies of all times.”

“I don't hate the movie. I hate that they spent every summer with each other even when they weren't able to touch each other.”

“Gin and Hotaru talked. They played around. They walked side by side. They shared meaningful, serendipitous moments. They did a lot of things. What more do you ask for?”

“They were holding themselves back a lot. Why? Because of that certain reason; they couldn't touch each other. They ended up suppressing their feelings because that very inability to touch each other made their future uncertain.”

“They knew time would separate them because Gin didn't grow up like Hotaru did. You should look into that, too.”

“Still, the closest they could be holding each other was no less within an arm's length. Well, not quite literally, because Gin would've disappeared if Hotaru did it in the beginning. And the movie wouldn't even exist in the first place.”

“Look at you being the smartpants you are and lecturing me about being devastated by movies.”

“Look at you scowling at me like a woman with no grace and no common sense. Where else can you find a friend who can intellectually challenge your feelings and perspectives like me?”

“There's more you can give than just a touch to show someone you care for them, you know.”

“No, listen. Imagine how devastating that is to not being able to touch someone you love, or care for.”

“That sounds relatable.”

“And familiar. Doesn't that remind you of something?”

“Sad relationship stories?”

“Quick quiz. Whose relationship?”

“Mine?”

“Wrong. Mine.”

“With whom?”

“Go figure.”
