He dropped her hand and turned away. "I'm going to head into work. Maybe you should take the day off. I can call a cab to take you home. Tamame?"
She nodded mutely, her heart a mixture of relief and unease - and just a hint of regret.

Sanem spent the weekend trying to keep herself busy and distracted. She worked on a new perfume, she sent samples to Aunt Remide, and fine tuned her business plan.
Monday came and she almost dreaded going into work. She hoped things wouldn't get uncomfortable between them, they still had 3 months to go with their arrangement! She decided to do her best to avoid him. This didn't prove too difficult because it seemed like he was avoiding her too. Good, at least he's not making it more difficult than it needs to be.
They spent the next two days effectively dodging each other, she would wait for him to leave the cey station, before she went to get herself a cup. She avoided eye contact when they were in the hallway at the same time. She spent most of the time in the archive room and this time he didn't seek her out. She even had a excuse for Guliz whose radar was working overtime. She told her that Can needed zero distractions when he was deeply involved in work and she was respecting that. They were meeting every evening after work though, Guliz had nothing to worry about.
It was Wednesday and Sanem knew they had to discuss the wedding, it needed to happen sooner rather than later, and with the way things were between them, she was leaning towards a quiet court wedding with Ayhan and Metin as witnesses. But they needed that talk.
She squared her shoulders, took a deep breath and knocked on his office door before opening it. She found him in deep conversation with a woman and just as she opened the door, the woman leaned towards him and said something, and they both laughed out loud. The scene hit Sanem in the gut. It felt like Polen all over again.
A mask fell over her face and she said, "Sorry Can, I didn't know you were busy, I'll come back later".
Can laughed at Ayse's joke and looked up just in time to catch Sanem's face as she witnessed the scene before her. He saw the cloud that settled over her face and he wanted to set it right - immediately.
"Sanem", he called out, just as she was closing the door. "Come in! I want to introduce you to my childhood friend."
He stood up and gestured for her to come to him.
She went - reluctantly.
He pulled her close by the shoulders pointed to his visitor. "This is Ayse, she's Remide Teyze's niece, we practically grew up together, well at least till I left for boarding school. I'm seeing her after a very long time", he smiled affectionately at Ayse.
"Ayse, this is the love of my life and my fiancee Sanem", he said beaming at Sanem.
Oh, he was good, Sanem thought. She watched Ayse's face as Can spoke, the brief annoyance in her eyes as they flicked over to look at Sanem, and she knew immediately that she was interested in Can. Did all the women in his life crush on him. Aiy!!!
