“So, what do you like to do for fun?” Ukai asked me. I sat on the swing next to him, swinging my legs back and forth but not actually going anywhere. I didn’t know how to respond to him. I never actually thought about what I like to do for fun.

“Well, I’m not for sure. I’ve never really thought about it.” I looked at him and grinned. I didn’t know what else to do but just smile at him. That’s all I’ve ever known to do.

He looked at me like I was crazy. Losing my smile, I looked at him confused. “You don’t have anything you like to do?!” I was taken aback by this but nodded my head. He sighed and started talking all about what he liked to do.

“Well, I like volleyball. It’s the best sort out there you know?” With him saying that my head perked up at him. “Hey, what’s volleyball?” He looked at me with wide eyes before yelling at me. “What!? You don’t know what volleyball is?” I shook my head no before he stood up and grabbed ahold of my arm.

He dragged me out of my seat and starting to run and pull me towards somewhere. “W-where are we going?” I asked him nervously. He turned around and stopped real quick to face me. He grinned at me. “To teach you volleyball of course.” My face went wide before I smiled softly and nodded my head. “Alright then.”

We ended up walking after running for a couple of minutes, but after 10 minutes, we ended up at a house. Looking at Ukai confused, I asked him where we were. He smiled before introducing me to the place.

“This is my grandfather’s house. He’s a volleyball coach so he teaches me all that he knows.”  I nodded in understanding and followed behind him while he walked around the edge of the home. Reaching to the back, I noticed how there was a net set up with a chalk outline on the ground. An old guy was talking around a couple of older kids.

Ukai ran right up to the guy before tugging onto his shirt. The old guy frowned before throwing him in the air off into the bushes. “Wah, what the hell old man?!” Ukai yelled at him in the air. I watched in horror as he flew in the air before landing ruffly in a bush.

“That’s what you get for being disrespectful to your elder’s young man!” The old guy yelled obviously pissed. The older kids laughed at all of this before they said their goodbyes and left the yard. One of them noticed me and walked over. I immediately got scared thinking the same thing was going to happen to me as well but stood in place. Just shaking really badly.

The older dude crouched down in front of me and smiled. “Goodluck with the old man little lady. Or else you’ll end up like Ukai over there.” he chuckled a little before rustling my hair and leaving. Shaking in my shoes, I melted down and sat on the ground, wondering how the heck I got myself mixed in with all of this.

That’s when it hit me. “Ukai Keishin! Why the hell did you take me here?!” I yelled furiously. The old guy that was laughing and got quiet while he watched me storm over to Ukai and drag him out of the bush onto the ground. He looked at me and smiled nervously before scratching the back of his head a little. “Well, you know. You wanted to know more about-” I cut him off before he could continue though.

“You bring me to a place that I’ve never seen before, plus I’ve just met you as well! You also say this guy is your grandfather?! He looks like a pedophile if I’ve ever seen one!” I yelled all in one breath. I looked at him while he was speechless. I was breathing hard at this point, but my silence was broken by a huge chuckle.

“This little girl is amazing. You just got tossed around by her!” I looked behind me to see the old man laughing hard. Realizing what I just did, I froze up and started to apologize over and over. Ukai chuckled a little before laughing along with his grandfather. I didn’t know what was happening, so I just went along with everything else.

Without notice though, the old geezer came up to me and started to ruffle my hair up. “Hey Keishin, where’d you find this girl. She’s got some spunk in her. I like it.” Walking away from him I stood next to Ukai. “Oh her? She yelled at me after I tried jabbing a stick at a kitten.” Ukai said oh so casually.

That caused him a hit to his head from his grandfather. He started to bicker some more at Ukai but I stood there dumbfounded at everything that was happening. Soon though, I relaxed and eventually laughed at the two of them.

The looked over and smiled. They were fine. I was fine. Ukai walked next to me and nudged me in the arm. “So, you wanted to know what volleyball was right?” My eyes lit up at that word and I nodded my head eagerly. “Yeah, I’ve heard of it on tv and seen a little bit. It seems really fun.”

The old guy grinned before walking to a stray ball on the ground. He picked it up and tossed it towards me. I caught it before looking at him and then at Ukai, who was grinning. I smiled at the two.

“Then why don’t I teach you then little kid. Think of it as a service in exchange for you keeping my grandson in check.” Ukai looked over at him annoyed before I nodded my head knowing this is the only chance I’ll ever get.

“Let’s do this.”

For the next four years, I stayed in the same place with my family for a change. Although though, it wasn’t all happiness. My family and I had to move right before I was going to be starting high school at Shiratorizawa. The best school in the Miyagi prefecture.

Although things didn’t go my way, my family ended up in Tokyo for my mother’s job again. A place where I made myself known all throughout my high school years. Also known as the place of my downfall.

I never expected things to go down south so quickly in a short amount of time. To problems with my father and dealing with an injury I never expected to get. I guess sometimes your life doesn’t go the way you want. You just have to fight through it. Even if it means leaving behind everything you love.

Maybe you just have to go and revisit some old memories you forgot you had. Startup a new hobby to get your mind off things.

Either way, I guess I just have to see how things roll out for me in the end. Maybe with you on my side as well, Ukai Keishin.
