"What the fuck? Why would you say that?"
"I wanted him to back off.""That doesn't mean I want the reputation of dating you!"
Kaelynn was stopped by Henning in the hallway, she tried to ignore him, but he was sad all the time because of his ex-girlfriend, so she tried not to ignore him. He was getting a little desperate talking to her, it annoyed Kaelynn. She wanted to get away from him as much as she could, ignoring his texts and calls, ignoring him in the hallways. She wasn't sure if Henning was getting the hint, maybe he was but he didn't want to be left alone. She respected that. She had tried to talk to Paul as much as she could, but Paul said she was making him uncomfortable. So she left him alone. It made her beyond sad that the boy she had loved for months was hurting her this way, but she tried not to think about it. The pain was still etched in her heart, and there was nothing anyone could really do about it.
"Kaelynn? Hello?"
Henning snapped her back into reality. "Yeah. Sorry, what were you saying?"
"Just think about it, think about how it would make Paul feel."
"Think about what?"
"Dating. You know, for a week."
"No." Kaelynn started walking away. Henning caught her by the arm.
"Kaelynn, please. Think about it?"
"I don't want to think about it! Just let me be single, okay?"
"I... okay." She could see the sadness in his eyes.
Kaelynn didn't know how Henning was feeling, she cared, but she almost didn't want to. She just wanted to breathe and think. She never liked the feeling of being single, but she never wanted to date anyone. No one was good enough for her broken heart. Henning was the same, she loved his dark brown curly hair and round nose and golden eyes. She liked the glasses he occasionally wore, wide frames made him seem like he had such a light heart. She loved the slight dark on his skin and his perfectly blended freckles. Now, she hated that she liked it, but at the same time she did. She just wanted to breathe, but she gave in.
"Fine. I'll think about it. Don't be too sad when I say no."
Henning's eyes lit up. "Okay! We can set ground rules and everything, I'll leave you alone when you want me to, I swear.""Nice offer. Let me think about it."
Before she could turn to walk away, Henning caught her in a hug. He was warm, comfortably warm. It made her worries melt away. She was perfectly fine with how it felt. She wanted it to last, but he broke the hug. He flashed the brightest smile, so bright it could compete with the sun, and he jogged away.
The next few times they talked, he asked her about her day, she would oblige. He would laugh at all her jokes, and scorn all the people that she had a bone to pick with. It was funny, he didn't seem like he was doing it to get in her pants. He was actually laughing at what she had to say, and it made her feel happy. For the first time in weeks, Kaelynn went home with a positive attitude. She was ignoring Jake and Gianna, and she didn't care too much about it. She had Henning to keep her company. She had all her other friends to accompany her, and every time they would say, "He's kinda cute." She couldn't do anything but agree. Henning was pretty cute, but she didn't want to fall for him. She didn't want to feel the pain of having to walk past her once loved, feeling the cold shoulder and shrinking. She didn't want to fall in love again.
She had finally gotten home after a long day at school, her dad was there, then he wasn't. Kaelynn didn't mind too much. She collapsed on the couch and relaxed. She could finally relax, feeling better than she had in a while. Over the past few days, Henning actually had made her happy. She felt happy.
Then her phone buzzed.
Can we talk? Like really talk- Paul
Paul. The last guy she wanted to talk to. She didn't know what to say, what if he had asked her out again? What if he confessed he did wrong and that he wanted her back so much, that he had loved her to the moon and back, like he did before. She wondered if she could take him back. It wasn't something she wanted to think about right at that moment.
Yeah. Sure- Kae
Thanks. Do you know someone named Henning?- Paul
Yeah. Y?- Kae
Are you guys dating?- Paul
Kinda.- Kae
Kae, please come back to me, I miss you- Paul
There it was. That's what she was worried about, that's what she didn't want to deal with. It seemed like everything from their relationship came flooding back. Their first kiss, their dates, the laughs they had with each others friends. She had to think, really think. Did she want him back? Did she want to accept all the times he was romantic, all the times he was proud of her being his girlfriend and shouting it to the world. Or did she want all the times of getting hurt and ignored and dumped. No, she thought, I don't. She only had to think for a moment of what she wanted to type out next. She wanted to type out all of the rage and pain, everything that he had caused her. She wanted to make him squirm. She wanted to make sure that he would never hurt her again.
No, Paul. You hurt me too much. What about all the times I wanted to take you out and you said no because you were busy? What were you really doing? Nothing. You didn't want to spend time with me, you could've told me instead of lying. I don't want you back Paul, I'm too damn good for you. I wanted a love, and you gave me someone to hate. Never ask me out again, Paul. Go date, someone, else.- The Girl You can't Get Back
She clicked off her phone. She felt giddy. She heard her phone ding several times, but she didn't know that it wasn't from Paul. It was from Henning.
