CAROLINE AND the rest of the whisperer's had left their previous campsite early that morning, they never stayed in one place for more than two nights, they liked to keep moving. if you didn't have a home you didn't have to worry about it getting destroyed.
alpha and her father were in the front of the line, walker masks on, everyone had theirs on, excluding caroline and negan. negan because he hadn't earned his yet, caroline because she didn't unless completely necessary. she stayed in the center of the whisperers as they traveled due to this, which meant negan had to be beside her, due to his lack of walker mask, too.
"so.. you got it in your backpack or something?" negan asked, he had learned how to lower his tone, though it was still too loud to caroline's ears. he wasn't whispering, more like talking in a deeper voice. caroline kept her stare straight ahead as she responded. "yes." she quietly replied, ignoring the grin she could see stretch over negan's face.
"can i see it?" he asked, caroline rolled her eyes, her jaw clenching as she grew irritated. they had been on foot for about two hours now, she had tried ignoring the man for half of that time, it didn't work. either he didn't know how to take a hint, or he just didn't care. caroline couldn't shout at him, she had no choice but to listen to him babble on and on right next to her.
"no." she replied, her eyes focusing on anywhere but him. negan was silent for a whole forty five seconds (she was secretly counting each pause he went from speaking, his longest was sixty three seconds so far) and caroline saw his mouth open but quickly shut it at the sight of a herd coming towards them. caroline licked her lips, slowing down her pace as the rest of the group did. luckily negan remained silent the whole time the group shuffled in between the walkers, the whisperers surrounding caroline and negan stayed with them to stop the walkers from sniffing them out.
caroline sunk her teeth into her bottom lip as a walker brushed past her, keeping her heavy stare locked onto the back of her father's head. when the group got passed the herd and were in the clear, negan's mouth opened.
"woah, that was some intense shit— i can't believe you got one of those things and don't wear it, i'd be all up in that shit," negan spoke to the girl, referring to her walker mask. the blonde rolled her eyes. "i'm sure you would be." she responded. alpha turned her head to look over her shoulder at the girl, putting a finger up to her mouth and shooting her a glare. caroline gritted her teeth. it wasn't her fault negan wouldn't shut up.
"jeez, the fuck is her problem?-"
"shut up. that means shut the hell up." caroline snapped at the man beside her in a whisper-yell. caroline closed her mouth after that and continued looking straight ahead. she was trying to not have the title of a child, negan was not helping her. if alpha thought she was a danger to the group she'd do something about it, caroline was sure of it. considering she killed her own daughter, caroline was nothing to her.
thankfully negan was quiet for a whole six minutes after that, caroline almost couldn't believe it. she was more thankful when he began to try and start up a conversation with the whisperer on his right, and left caroline alone. of course he didn't respond to negan, he merely glanced at him, and caroline bit back the grin that wanted to tug at her lips when negan puffed out a frustrated sigh, it was surely killing him to not be hearing his own voice every second.
the group entered the woods once again to look for a spot to stay for the night, caroline could never tell why alpha would pick the spots she would, everywhere looked the same, so she had no telling in how deep into the woods they would continue to travel until they stopped. they had no blankets, no tents, no nothing. alpha insisted if they were to walk with the dead, they had to live like the dead, and considering they couldn't get rid of their human need to sleep, they did it in the most uncomfortable way possible.
on the ground, no cushioning, only the uneven cold surface under them. at least it wasn't raining/hadn't rained for a while, caroline thought. every night for as long as caroline could remember, as she would lay on the ground in the woods, staring up at a tree branch or the night sky, she would wonder what it was like to have a home. thus being a thought that she would never share with anyone, she knew it was a stupid thought, homes didn't exist anymore, and if they did there were very few of them just awaiting to get destroyed. but that didn't mean caroline didn't dream of having one.
the group stopped their journey at one of the areas that was close to a river, caroline could hear it. she perked up at this, she preferred sleeping with a noise instead of complaint silence, it wasn't as eery. the group began to pick their spots around the area, some picking trees to lean back against.
"damn, this shit is gonna kill my back," negan complained beside her, his face scrunching up as his eyes glanced around him. caroline ignored him, as she lowered herself down to the ground, she rolled onto her stomach, folding her arms under her head to form a makeshift pillow. negan laid out on his back a few feet away from her, eyes falling shut with his hands clasped together on his stomach.
"seriously? can you go somewhere else," caroline spoke in annoyance, rolling her eyes when negan chuckled, his eyes remaining shut. the girl picked her head up only to turn it to face the other way, into the direction negan wasn't.
"no can do, sweet caroline."
"don't call me that."

caroline's eyes snapped open to the sound of a loud, ear piercing scream. she quickly shot up, her hand digging her knife out of her back pocket, she glanced around her surroundings, seeing her father and the rest of the whisperers were looking around for the source the noise had come from, but did slowly, as to not make any noise.
caroline swallowed the lump in her throat, her eyes glancing to negan who was now standing beside her. another scream sounded through the area, caroline could recognize what was happening, she could almost guess who it was too. negan was about to take off running towards the sound in an attempt to help them, caroline stopped him by grabbing onto his sleeve.
"don't, they're gone. you wanna be apart of us? rule number one you don't go after others if it means risking the rest of us." caroline told him, her hand dropping back down by her side. negan furrowed his eyebrows. "what? that's batshit crazy.. that's someone from your group why wouldn't you go try and save them?-"
"we aren't a family, negan. everyone needs to look after themselves." caroline interrupted the man. negan licked his lips, his expression full of shock, and a little bit of anger. he couldn't believe they would just sit there and listen to one of their members die without interfering. negan watched as the whisperers around them began to lay back down. caroline met her father's stare from across the area, nodding his head approvingly at his daughter. caroline returned back to her previous position on the ground, negan following her lead.
"but if it's me you'll come try and help me...right?" negan's curios voice broke the silence after a short moment. caroline's eyes remained shut as she answered.
