Hetty Feather And Diamond

We had left the circus. But that horrible Mr. Tanglefield had hit me in the ear with his whip!

"How's your ear, Emerald?" Diamond asked.

"It hurts. But we need to earn some money. Tanglefield owes me a lot of money. We shall try to get a job at the music hall today!"

People have called me many names. Matrons and nurses screamed my foundling name, Hetty Feather, which I detest. I always fancied my mother named me Sapphire for my beautiful blue eyes, which she actually did! I was Sapphire Battersea, taking my mother Ida's distinctive surname. But I've been called Hetty Feather by mostly everyone. Then I was Hetty Waters, because I met my real father, but his wife Katherine didn't like me that much.

Then, I was Emerald Mermaid when I worked at a seaside curiosity shop. When I worked at the circus, I was Emerald Star, which brings me up to date.

"But, how?" Diamond said, knocking me out of my daydream.

"You'll see Diamond, you'll see."

I had contrived a clever plan. Diamond and I walked to the Music Hall and sneaked through the back door. We walked around a few corners and stumbled upon the dressing rooms. There were a row of doors with different names on them. The other names weren't important, I just wanted to find Bertie's. Finally, I saw his. I knocked on the door.

"Come in," a voice said from inside. I opened the door, Diamond behind me. Bertie turned around and stared.

"Hetty, is that you?" He asked, in shock.

"Hetty?" Diamond said.

"Shush, Diamond. Yes it is me, Bertie. How's Miss Brisket? And Sarah? Rose- May?" I said Rose-May's name with a distasteful tone in my voice.

"I haven't seen any of them since I left Jarvis and came here. Rose-May was just my friend, Hetty. She was way too pious. She didn't believe in my dream, the way you did."

"Oh, Bertie, I don't know what to say!"

"How about I let you see the show for free tonight?"

"Yes!" Diamond said, realizing my plan, which was working perfectly.
