The next few weeks were nothing special. Sleep, Study and Shut up and listen to Nate were the only things I did. "The three magnificent Ses", Gwen called it.
Lisa and Seth had officially started dating. Nate was pretty upset... for about three days.
"But you see, my friend," said Nate on the phone the day after he was done wallowing. "There are other fish in the sea! More pearls to be found! Hell, more leaves to be raked! Who needs a Lisa, when you could have a Jasmine, now that she's free, or even a Vanessa Ryland, have you seen her? God, she makes me want to sing, and dance! But, you know as well as I do, Jay, that that ain't happening. Oh holy flappy bird, did you see Nancy Patrick today, wow those jeans with those legs, it was fanatastic."
He got over Lisa quickly.
"I still can not believe that Lisa would break up with her boyfriend for Seth!" Caja had exclamed. "I mean, he just seems like the kind of boy that always needs a girl to remind him that he's hot or something!"
"You could not be more correct, my little german friend," was my response.
Sleepers were mostly unknown to me, that is, I didn't recognize any of them. Katie Vanderbilt had a fear of spiders. Isaac Matthews was afraid of clowns. Dorris Delacourt was afraid of water. All of these were common enough, so I wasn't hard.
Pheobe was different though. Her dream was that the whole population of the planet tried to hold her down while the earth tried to consume her. It was like quick sand, but only she and I were being pulled, everyone else was fine. All seven billion people pushed and pulled so that she would go down. Pheobe screamed and cried. She was maybe twenty years old, although it was hard to tell with her face and eyes puffy from the crying.
"Help me!" the girl with bright red hair and freckles yelled. "Oh God, please help me!"
I tried to fight my way through the crowd. It was strange, not one person was saying a thing. Pheobe's cries were the only sounds to be heard.
"No, no!" Please stop!" she continued. "I can't do this, why do you want me to do this?"
I pushed and shoved a path for me to get to the center, it wasn't difficult because none of the people acknowledged my presence.
"Don't do this to me!!" Pheobe screamed. "Why aren't any of you answering?"
The people didn't seem to be making a huge effort to keep the girl down, the pushes and shoves were almost like somewhat strong taps on the shoulder. I reached for her hand.
"Get away from me!" she yelled, at that point her face was the color of her hair. "Get off of me!"
"I'm here to help you!" I responded. Waiting for her to take my hand.
"You can talk?" she cried even harder. The groud came up to her knees. She was now at a height that made her more vulnarable. I knew that I had to get her out fast.
"It sure seems like I can talk," I tried to not sound too annoyed, she needed to trust me. "Please take my hand!"
"Look at me!" she send, while continuing to endure to shoves. "Does it look like I can just grab your hand, or whatever?"
"I'll get you out, I swear," I promised.
"Ugh, fine!" she rolled her eyes and grabbed my hand. The moment our fingers touched my ankles were sucked into the ground.
"What is happening?!" she started screaming again. "You were supposed to get us out! Not get us more stuck!"
"I'm working on it!" someone's hand pushed my head
