Chapter IV, Pt. 1: The Story of Urokodaki

________________________________

Watching from the forest line while a demon on the loose was not a desired decision made on Sakonji Urokodaki's account.

As a retired Demon Slayer, the instinct of diving in between a human and a demon was a strong urge that bubbled within him.

However, if he had arrived a few seconds too early, Urokodaki would never have the opportunity to witness the strange instant that was the demon, who nearly feasted on a young girl, being decapitated by a headbutt (of all moves) from a young boy with dull maroon eyes and a strange bamboo wedged on his lips.

It was only a pretty life-threatening headbutt, sure. But a headbutt that could rip off a demon's head while no injuries are seen? That was certainly unheard of, even in the higher ranks of the Slayers, and especially since it came from a young male.

The scent of the young male… was human, yet not.

This instant immediately reeled Urokodaki back to watch and observe the fight between the two… humans… and the demon.

When the demon's body started to move again, reaching a hand out to the girl, the boy immediately kicked it away from the female who was gasping mouthfuls of air to regain her breathing after being choked. This time, the kick was definitely life threatening to the demon and flung the body into the trunk.

"You… you brat!"

The demon's head spoke when the body settled on the ground, shocking the young girl by her gasp while the boy only stared at the head in a strange amount of curiosity with emptiness Urokodaki has never witnessed.

"One of you is a demon after all!? You gave off such a weird vibe!” The head screamed in realisation and accusation towards the two teens.

“What the hell is a demon doing with a human!?”

Urokodaki's eyes narrowed further, so that's why the boy smells odd… but then why does he also carry the scent of kindness?

He couldn’t dwell on his thoughts further when the headless body was up and running, actively attempting to fight against the now-revealed demon boy, who seems to appear highly confused and gave off an overwhelming scent of vigilance towards his opponent.

“Stop it!” The girl recovered from the choking and grabbed a nearby hatchet close to her, running in to intercept the demon’s assault on her demon companion.

However…The head that was detached from its body was running towards her with newly grown arms.

The girl seems to have a keen perception of danger; even before the demon pounced at her, she immediately swung her hatchet behind her. This action caught the head off guard as it barely managed to hold the sharp edge of the blade with its hands, scarring its palms.

While it was distracted, the girl turned to her companion who was strangely out of focus,

“Brother!”

Urokodaki froze at the title,

They’re siblings?

A human sister… And a demon brother...

Then… This would mean they’re-

Urokodaki cut his thoughts off when the demonic brother was suddenly lobbed into the forest from the headless body, who then took off in his direction.

“Brother!” The sister screamed again in fear. Her attention was then cut off when the hair of the demon latched onto her hands. Her eyes widened in horror when the demon head latched its hands onto her shoulders.

What she did after was what made Urokodaki sure that she had the potential his student saw.

The girl’s face scrunched up, shaking off the demon that was holding on to her. As she let go of the hatchet that had the demon’s hair tangled onto, she swung her right leg back,

“Get out of my way!”

She screamed before socking the head in its face, launching the head with the axe to the trunk on the other side. The blade of the hatchet was latched into the trunk, trapping the head with its hair also tangled wedged between its arms and the wooden hilt.

The demon seems to also realise this once the sister went off into the forest to find her brother,

“I wrapped my hair around her hatchet to grab it, but it got tangled up! Dammit!”

Taking in what he has observed so far, Urokodaki was still skeptical about the two who were fighting against one demon.

...I should wait.

Urokodaki thought after a moment of silence.

I shouldn’t feel too attached to the candidates; although I see their potential, it's too early to make a solid judgement just based on this battle.

So he waited on the other side, making sure that he was at an observable distance while he was keeping himself hidden; the girl’s sense for potential threats was something noteworthy to be aware of.
