Jenny collapsed onto the park bench an hour and a half into her run. Her breaths coming out laboured, her heart pounding hard against her chest as the sweat soaked through her shirt as if she'd just taken a quick shower.
Over the past week she'd taking to running for an hour or so after school. Something that she would have laughed at years ago if someone had ever suggested the idea of Jenny Archer running.
On the first day she'd run for five minutes before she collapsed in exhaustion. Then she'd spent the rest of the time alternating between jogging and speed walking.
Her muscles had ached all night, protesting her sudden change in activity. The slightest movememnt caused her to gasp in pain.
The next day, Jesse had joined her, only to leave her behind in the dust because she couldn't keep up with him. He wasn't invited after that.
It took four more days before Jenny had gotten the hang of it and had managed to run a good hour before collapsing from exhaustion.
Jenny placed her hand against her pounding chest, palm face down as she massaged it. She had slowly liked the feeling of accomplishment that came with the exhaustion. She felt like she had accomplished something that she had been dreading.
But then again, that wasn't the reason why she had started running.
The reason was simple.
Daemon Matthews.
He had slowly devoured her thoughts over the past week, creeping in inch by inch and before she knew it, he had occupied her every thought.
It had started that night, last Tuesday, when he had followed her outside as she bade Glenn goodbye.
She knew she shouldn't have pushed him as soon as he had stepped closer to her, without any concern or care for the fact that anyone could walk out of the house and see them.
The way he had leaned into her, his eyes gleaming darkly before he said the three words that had sent a shudder run down the length of Jenny Archer's body as if it was an electrical current.
"I'm your type."
Then to make matters even more crazy, Daemon Matthews leaned in closer, going in for a kiss.
Fortunately, Jenny saw it coming and pushed him away before his lips could claim hers.
"Stay away from me!" she snapped, still making sure her voice wouldn't reach inside the house. She didn't want anyone running outside and catching them.
Daemon's lips quickly pulled up into a Cheshire cat smile and Jenny gulped in terror as she read the look that slowly graced his face. One that clearly read that he was up for the challenge.
Before he could say a word, she turned and walked... no, Jenny Archer ran inside the house to the safety of her room.
That night Daemon came to her.
In her dreams, he had smiled his devilish smile before he pulled her away into the privacy of a room. One that Jenny was unfamiliar with.
To make matters worse, Jenny did nothing to stop him. In fact, she had willingly followed after him, her heart pounding against her chest as a nervous smile appeared on her face.
