It's been three months since Alex has last been in their apartment. Jack's apartment. It's Jack's apartment now. He doesn't own any part of it anymore. Alex doesn't live there.
Fuck, he misses Jack. He just doesn't have the heart to tell him why he actually left. He wants Jack to move on and be happy, but this kid doesn't have a parent and he doesn't want Jack to be involved with any of it. It's a three year old child who's mother died just five months ago.
His mom and dad are a big help, but they're still homophobic assholes. Alex's new job is a shit show too, but it pays the bills and puts food on the table for his daughter.
The kids great. Probably the only ray of sunshine in this dark hell. Liberty is a good kid, though she does keep asking about her mom and Alex really has mixed feelings about this whole thing. Yeah, Liberty is biologically his child, but she's also the child of his actual rapist and the reason he had divorce the love of his life. And honestly he's glad Liberty's mom is dead.
If only none of this had ever happened. He should've cut contact when he dropped out of college. He should never have come out to his parents. Then Liberty wouldn't exist and Alex would still be living with Jack.
And everything would be great.
But that's not how it turned out.
So here Alex is, driving his daughter to daycare so he can go to his stupid job that he hates and make money for his rapist's child to have a better life.
And he's gonna die alone.
"Dada!" Says the child from the backseat, pulling Alex out of his morbid thoughts for the third time this morning.
"Yeah sweetie, what's up?"Liberty starts talking about a dinosaur or something but half of it's gibberish so Alex just pretends to know what she's talking about.
Someone calls him, but there's no caller ID so he lets it ring. The person calls a few more times during the short drive. The caller continues to call as Alex takes his daughter into the daycare and checks her in.
Then he finally answers his phone in the parking lot.
"Listen, whoever the hell you are, what the fuck do you want?"The stranger on the other line clears their throat. "Is this Alexander Gaskarth?"
Something's wrong. Something is horribly, horribly wrong.
"Y-yeah. This is him."
"I think you should take a seat."He doesn't expect the next statement, he's not even sure how he should feel.
"There's been an accident. Your parents were declared dead at the scene."
Now fucking what?
The deal was, Alex takes care of the kid if he divorces Jack. Otherwise the kid was in foster care since bitch and her entire family were fucking murdered or some shit.
So now the deals off because his parents are out of the picture.
Since they don't have a will and he's their only child, he gets all their money and belongings, but he's a single parent taking care of an unplanned, but still very much so loved, child. What the hell is he going to do? He can't drive now, he's too stressed out thinking about how he's going to do this on his own. What the absolute hell is he going to do?
Then a thought flashes in his head.
The deal is off.
He can take care of the kid, and be with Jack. But the divorce is done. It's over. Jack probably fucking hates him.
But maybe.... just maybe....
