Chapter 5

"Yeah you know I loved you but I can't forgive you"

This moment you felt more free than you had ever felt in your life.

You were finally getting the chance to take charge of your destiny, the one that Kaneki had stolen from you.

You had no idea how blind you had been until now, how you had never noticed how possessive he was and how wrong everything had been.

Stockholm syndrome does weird things to people.

With your phone destroyed, there was only one way Kaneki could track you, and that was through your debit card usage.

Despite his noses sensitivity to blood, he is not a fantasy werewolf or vampire and he can't track you by scent.

You'd be limited to cash for the duration of time you wanted to be away from him. You could make one large withdrawal but it would have to be some where pretty far from here to throw him off of your trail.

But should you even bother going far from Hide's? Maybe some reverse psychology could work where making a withdrawal near here would signal to Kaneki that you had gone far away from here.

He'd never suspect that you were hiding in plain sight at Hide's house unless Hide was the one to tell him, and despite being best friends at one point, their differences in lifestyle have pulled them away from each other's circles in consideration of their respective safety statuses.

If Hide were to associate with Kaneki he'd most likely be killed by the ghouls, and vise versa for Kaneki and the CCG.

Then again, you had a bigger problem than Kaneki. Whoever it was that was making those messes and leaving cryptic messages in your home could still be tracking you.

Beforehand you had thought that maybe they were after Kaneki, and they were going to use you and Kaede to draw him out.

But you still had to consider the possibility of them actually targeting you and you alone, and this having nothing to do with Kaneki.

If that was the case, you'd have a lot to worry about with Kaede's safety. Not to mention Hide's safety considering you could have just given the ghoul tracking you ample time to prepare to harm you now that you didn't have Kaneki to protect you.

Maybe it was best for you to send Kaede with someone you trusted and leave Hide's home to ensure the older mans safety as well. But people you could truly trust with the life of your child we're few and far between.

Meiko was obviously your first choice, but at the end of the day she was still just a human. If these people were after you and saw that you sent Kaede there they could just kill her and take him hostage and it wouldn't even be a challenge.

You couldn't do that to her, you wouldn't risk either of their lives like that.

Kaneki, was obviously out of the equation too.

So who the hell! What were you supposed to do!

You pulled at your hair aggressively.

Suddenly your sleeve was tugged.
"Mom, are you okay? I heard you and dad on the phone, what's going on?"

You hadn't realized it but your argument with Kaneki had woken Kaede up.

"Don't worry about it sweetie, everything is gonna be all right, okay?" you told him with a shaky and forced smile.

Kaede shook his head "Why are we not at home? You and dad sounded really angry? One of my school friends told me about this happening with his parents, are you guys getting De- Divorced?" He asked with a confused expression.

"No, baby." Just what were these teachers telling these first graders? And not like he could understand, but you can't get divorced if you never got married, so what you were about to tell him wasn't a lie "Me and Dad aren't getting divorced. Like I said everything will be fine and mommy is gonna take care of you. We're just gonna be staying at Uncle Hide's house for a while, Daddy went....on a long trip, yeah a business trip so we just won't see him for a while"

wow, you failed at sounding convincing at all. Kaede was smart you would not be surprised if he called you out on your very obvious lie about Kaneki's whereabouts.

Thankfully, Kaede nodded at your words, but you could tell he still wasn't truly convinced. The boy had been through a lot and mentally was much older than other kids his age. You weren't fooling him so easily, but seeing how stressed you were he likely decided to just leave you be for the time being.

You could only hope he didn't resent you for lying to him when he found out. But even if it caused him to hate you, you'd do anything to keep him safe. Even if that meant keeping Kaneki far away from him.

"Don't worry Kaede, now come here and cuddle with me so that you can go back to sleep, tomorrow is a long day and you have school"

Saying that line made you realize something, Kaede definitely did actually have school but would taking him be worth the risk?

You knew that not taking him would make the young boy upset and shatter the lie you had told him earlier, but you didn't want him to be exposed to the truth quite yet.

This was something you would definitely need to talk to Hide about whenever the man got home.

Kaede tapping you and looking at you with a pout broke you out of your thoughts once more. You had obviously been neglecting your cuddle duties.

You hugged him tighter and decided the best course of action would be to give your body the rest it demanded in crave, you wouldn't be able to do much of anything with no proper rest.

It's been a loooooonnnnnnggggggg time (again) since I last updated, but I logged in here one day and saw recent comments asking for this, and this chapter (though it's filler) was halfway done so I finished it lol.

I can't say if I'll be back soon, senior year of college is beating my ass and I'm never really on Wattpad anymore and I've been writing newer (and wayyy better fanfictions on other sites). So since the first book to this is finished this sequel just isn't on my priority list anymore, unfortunately, and I wish this site was like Quotev where I could have a Co-Author without needing to give up my account password, oof.
