Even though the year had started a few weeks ago, I was still moving in.
My dorm, which was very inconveniently built across campus from where I needed to be, was mostly mine as well - my roommate was rarely there. I'm not even sure she even lives on campus. The day I met her, she mentioned that she lived with her boyfriend and her parents bought her dorm to be nice, and she only moved in for the show. Her bed was still covered in the grey sheets issued by the school, and her side of the closet was still empty. Her wall was blank, so I took it upon myself to hang up a few posters.
I wish I could say I was lonely, but I'm quite used to living alone. As you know. I've got my own company anyways.
One of the main things that I remember amidst all of Amber's talking last night is the rumor that apparently, there are exchange students.
From where I don't know. But Amber wouldn't stop talking about how fast she could snag one for herself. Just watch - the day that they come, I'm going to be sitting next to some rich scrub from London wearing Gucci sunglasses to a 10 AM lecture.
It's nighttime, and I've finished my homework for the night - I'd say about 50% is good enough. There is an un-ignorable pit of hunger in my stomach and I have decided that I am going to go and fix it. I know that at this time of night, the cafeteria will be well past closed, so I have decided I am going to hop into my car and drive to the local Burger King.
Getting on my jacket, I hastily snatch my keys off of the hook on the wall by our door and walk out. Even though I know no one locks their door anymore, and no one is busy stealing when they're all nose-deep in work, I lock the door anyway.
Down the hall, it seems as if someone is struggling.
I raise an eyebrow and walk a little faster, eventually stopping in front of the said hallway and eyeing the person in front of their door. They shove the key in the knob, wiggle a little bit, kick the bottom of the door, yank the key out of the knob with a metallic crunch, and then mutter before repeating the same steps.
As I squint to catch their features, I can't register who he is. His hair is just a tinge of purple, and he has been to have stuck an almost gaudy amount of pins and buttons onto the front of his windbreaker.
As I walk closer, he seems to notice me, judging by the way he angrily looks up, and then his features melted back into a worried expression.
"Need some help?" I ask, and he nods his head and starts to babble in a foreign language.
Oh, an exchange student.
"Y-Yes," he says, in a thick...Spanish? Accent. He sounds like he speaks Spanish, is what I mean. "Door stuck." I don't think he speaks much English.
I stick my hand out, and he tentatively places the key into my palm. His awful dye job catches my eye, but I'm not going to mention it - also, one of his many buttons says "Daddy's Little Princess", and I hold in a smile fully aware that he doesn't know what it means.
"You have to turn the knob first," I say, demonstrating. "Otherwise, it won't open."
He rubs his chin and nods as I place the key back into his hand. As I start to walk away, he waves, and I smile back and wave as well. He opens the door once again, the way I showed him, and his roommate calls out, "Hey there, Princess." He politely responds with an oblivious "Hullo".
The parking complex is large and empty. My footsteps echo off the concrete. Somewhere a few floors below me, a car starts up. Someone's reverberated talking resonates throughout the floor.
Eventually, I find my car and get in, and in no time, I'm on the road.
The street is still a bit damp from the earlier rain I refused to drive in, the streetlights and stoplights reflecting off the water - and I feel as if I'm living in a painting, just for a moment. I flick my signal and turn left into the parking lot of the restaurant, the blinding white sign burning a hole into the deep blue sky.
