THE GAME HAD GONE ON for way too long. I loved basketball and I certainly loved watching a good game of it, but not when my heart's beating at twenty miles a second.
Whenever the guy beside me, who I should probably give a name to because calling him 'the guy beside me' is kinda mouthy, made a single movement, I'd flinch and dive towards Bec and she didn't seem too happy about that. He'd jump up occasionally to cheer or cuss whenever his favourite team scored.
I patiently waited for the first quarter of the game to end, so I could stand and get some fresh air and when the commentator finally announced it, I felt like a kid who'd just seen Santa for the first time.
Then, I leaned towards Bec for the millionth time. "Yo, I'm heading out for-"
"What?!" she shouted.
Oh yeah, the place was too noisy for her to hear me.
"I said I'm heading out!"
She didn't reply. She just stared at the huge jumbotron and her mouth widened.
Curious, I looked up at the jumbotron too and my mouth widened as well. Bec started to poke at my ribs with her elbow as she pointed at the huge display on the jumbotron titled 'The Kiss Cam'.
And I thought today couldn't possibly get any worse...
What are the chances that of all the people in the whole arena, we were the ones being displayed on the kiss cam?
I could see Ryan pounce at Alex with a peck to his cheek and Alex didn't seem very excited about it, wiping off Ryan's spit from his face.
Many people in front of us jumped and made dumb faces as they tried their best to get spotted on the jumbotron. When I eventually saw myself on it, I found myself leaning further away from the guy beside me- You know what, let's call him Bob for now.
The display zoomed in on me and Bob after a while(because why wouldn't it?) and we stared at each other awkwardly. He didn't seem excited about this either.
He shook his head at the jumbotron and mouthed the word 'NO!'.
My cheeks, at the time, were red-hot and I felt like I was moonwalking on the sun!
"I don't know him," I shouted as I heard people around us chanting: KISS! KISS! KISS! Either way, we both stared at the jumbotron and waited for it to zoom in on another couple.
Bec continued to poke me and I slowly turned to face Bob. He seemed so pissed off- very pissed off.
Eventually, he rolled his eyes and casually leaned in, pressing his lips to mine for a very short time. "There! Are you happy now?!" he screamed at the jumbotron. "Now, can we move on with the fucking game?" Retards.. he added with a whisper.
I... Well, I was speechless. I felt like I was dying. Breathing was so hard for me then and I begged Bec to let me sit at her spot. I didn't care if her return-favour would include selling my vital organs or something, I just knew I couldn't spend three more quarters next to someone I didn't even know.
I looked up at Ryan and smiled weakly when I finally sat close to him. He didn't seem like he'd kept a grudge after me not wanting to sit with him, but it still felt awkward sitting with him.
The game continued normally even though I still felt like I was dying.
"So, what team are you rooting for?" Ryan asked. At first, I thought he was talking to Alex, but Alex seemed too occupied with his sixth dream to answer.
I cleared my throat and looked up at him. "Um... Miami ice?"
"Really?!" he asked with a high-pitched voice as he turned dramatically and gave me a wide-eyed glare. I nodded timidly when he hovered over me.
"Yeah?" I answered.
"Pfft. The Los Angeles Rivers are way better!"
I sat up and gave Ryan a death glare. "Yeah. Better at losing!"
Ryan gasped and stared at me in silence. We probably looked like two cheetahs going at the same prey right about now.
"What the heck are you two doing?" Bec asked, laughing. Her hand stretched towards Alex's lap as she climbed over mine and smacked him. "Wake up! You're missing an intense staring contest here!"
Alex woke up abruptly and choked on air. He looked furiously at Bec and then finally at me and Ryan.
Ryan eased first and looked at the court avoiding any eye contact with me. He looked mad and I realized I'd been mad too. Hmm, who knew?
In a moment, Ryan burst out in loud laughter covering his mouth in the process. His shoulders moved up and down and he didn't mind that people were shushing him.
"You're so fucking hilarious!" he said.
"Who? Me?" I asked as I looked around stupidly.
"Yes, you! I wouldn't have guessed you'd be such a basketball fan. I was waiting for you to pounce at me just now."
My cheeks flushed automatically. "I'm sorry-"
"No no. It's just fun to finally see the real you."
I felt awkward when I finally noticed that I'd closed the distance between me and Ryan without feeling all-nervous.
"Yap!" Bec interrupted, "This girl's a demon when it comes to basketball. That's why she's the captain."
"She's the basketball captain?!" Ryan asked with an even high pitch that time. I shrank in my seat and nodded.
"Yeah."
"And she gives us such a hard time," Alex chimed in.
Ryan reached out for both of my cheeks, squeezed and stretched them like they were some kind of elastic rubber. "This cute little thing?"
Bec and Alex both looked at each other and answered in unison, "Yap!"
"Hmmm." Ryan turned, nodded, and observed me. He let go of my cheeks and continued to stare. "There's a lot more I have to learn about you now, Jamie."
