Chapter 10: The Morn of a lost one

I woke up to Rex crying, Isabella was infected. Archie and I ran to the Rex’s tent. There was blood everywhere and a knife in Isabella’s head. She turned into one of them, and I knew that Rex wanted the best. He stabbed her in the head because he didn’t want her to go around crawling and eating people. I wanted to go and sit down with violet and cry all day but I can’t. She was my sister and I know that she would do that for me if she were older.

I went and sat down next to Rex, he was clutching Isabella’s body. I grabbed the body from him and took her to wear she was bitten. Archie and I started to dig a hole to bury the body.

It took at three hours but we finished digging, she was finally in the ground. Her grave was beautiful, with different flowers and a cross made out of sticks. I brought Rex to where she was and he got to his knees and stayed there staring at the ground, and I sat there with him, it was silent. I knew he was very close to her, but I was her sister too, I had to stay strong for her, I loved her and I always will, but we need to survive. I pulled him way from the grave and way bringing him to the camp.

“You bitch, you did this to her, if you weren’t paying attention to her, this would have never happened. She would have still been alive. She was just a little baby; she was turning 2 in October. Isabella could have lived and I would have protected her for the rest of her life, but you took that away from both of us.”

I’ve never seen this side of him, he always was thoughtful and careful of whatever he said. Something clicked inside, he never acted like this when we got a letter from the army saying that our oldest brother died. I didn’t want to say anything or even mention Cameron’s death. I started at him and ran back to camp. I knew that Isabella was his favorite just like I was I Cameron’s favorite.  I started to think about the letter that they gave us about Cameron’s death. It was straight forward, no sympathy added. The letter to me was worth less, useless, pointless. The government sent a letter about someone’s death with no sympathy, none at all.

Dear Family of Cameron Richardson,

This is a letter from the United States Government to state that your family member, Cameron Richardson has been found dead at war. There will be a package sent you that contains letters wrote by him that were found by a solider, his dog tags, and a U.S. Army Award.

I got back to the camp and Archie grabbed my arm and hugged me. I could tell that he heard the conversation. I can’t remember the last time I got hugged by anyone. I missed the feeling of being cared about and loved. I didn’t want to let go of Archie, I think he cares about me and my family. We are a family now. I let go and walked over to Violet, and picked her up.

I love my family, and I will do anything to keep them alive but Rex can’t be acting like this and treating people in this way. He must know that people will die and that some people weren’t made for this world. Isabella was weak after I cut off her leg, she was just a baby. Babies have small bodies and if they get infected, the infection will start to spread faster and faster. I watched Violet and saw how she had no worries about the world that everything was going to be okay. I want Violet to live in a world without worries but that won’t happen. I want to protect her, just like Rex wanted to protect Isabella. I see what is happening and I know that people will die and it’s hard to know that our loved ones will go. Rex didn’t want that to happen with Isabella, he loved her as much as I love Violet. She means the world to me; I would go crazy just like mom and dad did when they thought Rex died….. A mother can’t live without her children.

A mother can’t live without her children, I thought, mom and dad wanted her child back and they would do anything to make their family unite. How could I have not known this? I would do anything for Violet, just like mom and dad would do anything for Rex, and Rex would do anything to keep his sisters alive, to keep the family united. It’s all coming to me, I feel so stupid. Rex is mad at me because I let this happen; I let Isabella die because I wasn’t watching her.

“How could I let this happen” I whispered to myself. Archie came and sat next to me.

“Don’t beat yourself up, it was a mistake, you’re just human. Humans make mistakes. I should have been there with you. Cloey, you can only handle one kid at a time, you’re just 16 years old. I wasn’t just your fault.”

“I see why Rex went crazy, just like my mom and dad did when they thought Rex died. My mom and dad weren’t selfish; they just wanted our family to be reunited. If I were to lose Violet, I would probably go crazy and I would have wanted us to be reunited again. Rex didn’t want to lose his sisters; he didn’t want to lose another family member.”

“Kid, you have a big heart. You have gone through so many things and still manage to forgive them. “Archie smiled at me

I saw Rex coming out from the woods, he looked at Archie. “We need to start heading out, we are losing daylight. We need to pack now, or we will never get to the port.” Rex said to Archie without looking at me

I went over to my tent holding Violet. I put Violet in the tent as I started to pack. I grabbed my duffle bag and stuffed my flashlight, baby supplies, sleeping bag, and pillow. I pulled out my diary and started to write quickly.

Dear diary,

It’s been a mournful morning, Isabella didn’t make it through the night, and she became an undead.  Rex had to kill her and then we buried her. Rex was furious with me because I let this happen, I wasn’t watching her. She died because of me. If I were watching her, this would never happen. I don’t I will ever forgive myself.

I have now realized why parents decided that we should have died. They thought that Rex was dead so they wanted our family to reunite. They knew that no one should have to live in a world like this. Rex went crazy and called me a bitch because he cared about us. We were the only family he had left. He wanted us to stay alive. I would have gone crazy if Violet died because I wanted to be with her again. A mother can’t live without her children….

Love,

Cloey
