Chapter 4: Daniela’s supermarket

We finally arrived to Daniela’s supermarket and we entered, watching people push and stomp over people looking for food and other goods. I ran to the produce section to grab arm full of oranges, apples, strawberries, mangoes, and even some bananas. I ran around the whole store looking for my dad so that I can put the goods that I had in my arms to the cart. On my way looking for my dad an old lady grabbed me and asked if she could have some oranges because she had no food for her family, I gave her 10 of my 40 oranges and ran, making sure I had no contact with the woman.

As i want to find my mom, an old man came running towards me, luckily my brother was right on time to save me. Rex punched the man full force in the face, and the old man fell to the ground and didn’t move. When finally I found my mom, and put all the produce in the cart.

My dad then told me to go and get 5 packages of baby diapers for my sister Isabella. I ran to the baby department, and saw there was a baby wrapped in a blanket under the diapers. Next to the baby there was a letter that said “Someone please help Violet, my daughter. I was just bite a few minutes ago and I must do what’s right. My daughter has no bites or scratches. If you see this note, please take my daughter and protect her with your life. Let her know that I always loved her. Please take her and run. I know what those things can do, I’ve see them. RUN! NOW!!”

I looked at violet, she was about 3 months old, and she was beautiful, she had light brown hair and green eyes. I grabbed Violet and put her inside on my duffel bag, the ones that had the food in. I grabbed about 4 more blankets, so extra clothes for violet, some formula, bottles, pacifiers, 5 packs of diapers, and quiet toys. I looked back into my bag to see Violet asleep on the right side of my bag.

I ran to catch up with my mom and dad but then something caught my attention. There were about 6 walkie-talkies and batteries in a shelf. I grabbed them and put them carefully in my bag making sure that I dint wake up Violet. Then I saw my parents and siblings walking quickly to the exit with lots of food and about 10 packages of water bottles. Before I ran out of the super market I saw 3 tents and about 15 flashlights. I called for my brother and he came running towards me, and I told Rex to grab those cases which contained the tents. What surprised me about him was that he listened to everything I said with no questions being asked.

I tried not to shake the bag to much because I knew that Violet would wake up. I ran to the car and saw that everyone was already inside and I was the only one that was stilling running towards the car. I jumped in and set the bag right next to me. My mom looked back at me and saw me starring at the bag. Then my brother turned around to look at me and my bag, but then he started to scream. I told him to calm down, and he fainted. My mom started to ask me questions. “What’s inside of the bag, Cloey? Why did Rex faint? Who is crying?”

I looked down into my bag and pulled out violet along with the note. My mom turned green and wanted my dad to pull over, but he said that there isn’t time. I gave mom the note and she read it and fainted. The Violet started to cry and Isabella started to scream. I felt nauseous. I knew that Violet is now my daughter, and I couldn’t let my mom be her mother because I knew that my mom didn’t like her.

I grabbed Violet and cradled her in my arms, and I thought she might be hungry. I grabbed a water bottle and put some formula inside. I shook the bottle and gave in to her, and I decided that she might have been cold so I wrapped her in her blanket. I gave Isabella her pacifier and she fell asleep.

It was quiet in the car for a long time. I would watch my dad run his hand through his hair nervously about every 10 minutes. I stared at my mom, she had her eyes wide-open. I could tell that my parents were worried, nervous, angry, scared, and shocked.

I broke the silence by telling my mom that Violet was my responsibility; I can take care of her. She is my daughter now and nothing can split us up. I know that I shouldn’t have grabbed her from the shelf. I saw her hopelessly crying and I thought to myself, I can give this child a future. I couldn’t leave her behind to be eaten by those things.

My mom looked at me and looked back at the road. “You’re just a child. How can you possibly take care of a baby when you can’t even take care of yourself? I never thought you out if anyone on this planet would finally have a heart to take a child and raise her. I never even though you had a heart, you were always so selfish.”

How could you say that? Look at yourself, no wonder I’m selfish. I’m the daughter the most selfish person in the world. It’s always about you, you, and you. If you want me to be a good person then you can fix your attitude and personalities before you talk about someone else’s.

The car fell silent once again. I was quiet and regretted what I said to my mother. What if she was right and I was selfish. I was still mad at her for saying that to me. How could she say that to me, I am her daughter or am I?

Dear diary,

It has been one day and things have gone completely insane. I am now a mother. I found a baby, Violet, abandoned by her mother in a store when I went to get some supplies for my family. I felt very bad for talking back to my mom today. She said I was selfish but the truth is, she is selfish too. We got lots of supplies including guns, ammunition, food, and water.  all I know about my family is that we are going to be traveling to Canada for safety, but we aren’t sure what going to be there. Will there be safety, shelter, food, or water…………. only the future knows.
