Ashton Irwin was a nineteen year old boy with an eating disorder. He suffers from anorexia; his constant loss of his appetite was due to his obsession with being thin. Little did he know that he was already thin – he was too thin; you could practically see where his bones started and ended, yet whenever he looked in the mirror, all he could think was: “I’m so fat…I’m disgusting.”
Michael Clifford was an eighteen year old boy with a drug problem; he used drugs as a distraction from reality. His addiction was getting out of hand, but he wasn’t necessarily addicted to drugs – he was addicted to fake happiness. He was addicted to being able to forget about all of his problems. He was addicted to distracting himself from his sad life. It wasn’t the drugs he was addicted to at all; he just used the drugs as a way to pretend to be happy.
Sometimes all you need in life is someone to show you that you serve a purpose in this messed up place we call a world. Although they have very different reasons for feeling sad, they both have one thing in common: they’re stuck in this clinic, and they can either make the best or the worst of it. It may seem impossible for two sad people to make each other happy, but somehow, two negatives make a positive; they balance each other out.
And that’s exactly what Ashton and Michael do for each other.
