“Ashton, honey,” the curly haired boy heard his mom shout from downstairs. “Do you have your stuff all packed up?”
Ashton sighed before hollering back his response, “yeah! I’ll be downstairs in a minute.”
Today was going to be Ashton’s first day at a clinic—Ashton referred to it as ‘hell in the form of a building that forces me to sit in a room and suffer like I do every night,’ but his mother thought that it would be an amazing help for Ashton and his anorexia. It was unplanned just how long he was going to be staying there—as it was some sort of hospital—so he had to make sure he had everything he needed in his suitcase.
The only thing Ashton looked forward to about the whole thing was being somewhere in which there were probably some people who felt how he felt. There was going to be so many people with so many different struggles; some people had things such as eating disorders, while some people were sick with diseases. Ashton truly felt as if it was ridiculous of him to be in the same place as people who were undeniably sick; though his mother would argue that in some sort of way, he was sick, too.
With a sigh, Ashton zippered his suitcase shut and headed downstairs to find his mom. His mom greeted him with a sympathetic smile, concern in her eyes as she placed her hands on Ashton’s upper arms. She them a small squeeze, reaching up to move a strand of hair out of his eyes afterwards.
“I know you’re going to be able to get through this. It might not be easy, but I’m in no way exaggerating whenever I say that you are going to defeat your anorexia. Don’t let your mind control you. I would bet that you over anyone else can overcome something as mind-consuming as this,” his mom paused, looking Ashton in the eyes again. “You’re so strong. No matter how hard things get, never give up.”
“I’d never give up,” Ashton promised her, hoping that was true. “I just don’t want you to worry about me; don’t let me ruin your mood. I’m really not worth worrying about, Mom.”
“Nonsense,” she reassured him, “you come before me any day. Well, the car is started outside. Are you ready to go?”
Ashton sighed, forcing a smile on his lips as he squeezed the handle on his suitcase. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

Ashton’s mom had left shortly after he had signed in, and he was currently left sitting in a chair by himself. He was on the first floor of the clinic; all he could think about while his hands were sweaty and his teeth were chattering was that the room reeked of hopelessness. He had been waiting for somebody to tell him where he was going to be staying, and it took around ten minutes for someone to finally approach him.“Excuse me, I’m nurse Jade and I couldn’t help but notice that you are sitting by yourself,” the woman said. “What’s your name and what are you in for?”
“I’m Ashton Irwin,” he explained, “I’m here because my mom claims that my anorexia has gotten in the way of so many opportunities. Unfortunately she just realized that now; but I’ve been diagnosed with it for two years now.”
“Do you have a room?”
“Nope.”
“Come with me, I’ll give you somewhere to settle in.” Nurse Jade smiled before leading me down a hallway to a room, and I was following along fine until I ran into someone.
