“While you are here, you will be expected to have a weigh-in once a week. Your weigh-in days will be on Monday,” nurse Jade told Ashton, standing in the doorway of his and Luke’s room. “I know it may be hard, but you’re going to have to eat something. Even if it’s just a few bites, I just want you to eat.”
Ashton nodded, taking a deep breath in and out through his nose. Ashton knew that he should have seen this coming—a clinic wasn’t going to allow him to skip meals. He was able to get away with eating at home; always saying that he ‘wasn’t hungry’ or that he’d ‘eaten something already.’ His excuse worked up until his mom found old, uneaten food hidden in his room. From that moment on, Ashton’s mom knew what was up with him and vowed to try her best to help him overcome it.
Nurse Jade left the room at that, leaving both Ashton and Luke alone once again. Luke knew that the hazel eyed boy was upset; he had glossy eyes and he was biting hard at his bottom lip. Luke reached out and squeezed his shoulder sympathetically, wanting to let him know that he would be okay by his simple gesture.
“I can’t let them weigh me,” Ashton finally said, his thoughts loud in his ears. The silence was loud, the air thickening as every second passed by. “I can’t eat. I just got here, Luke, I shouldn’t have to do this already.”
“You’re going to be fine. I’m not a therapist and this may not help you in away way, but I want you to know what I will listen. I will care.” Luke promised him, a small smile on his lips. “If you want, I can come with you to your weigh-in later. I know I’m not allowed to see all of your information, but I’m sure Nurse Jade wouldn’t mind me being there.”
“That means a lot to me, thankyou,” Ashton smiled back. “Hey uh, I was just going to get myself some water to drink. Do you want a bottle?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Okay, I’ll be right back.” Ashton left the room, heading over to the vending machine filled with various different drinks. The only think Ashton allowed himself to put into his system was water; he felt it would fill him up enough to get him through the day.
Ashton took out a five dollar bill from his pocket, confident that it would be enough for two waters. He kept trying to put the $5.00 into the machine, but it wouldn’t let him put the money in. The machine continued to spit out the money at Ashton, leaving him confused.
“The machine only accepts one dollar bills,” Ashton heard a somewhat familiar voice behind him, and by instinct, he turned around.
“Oh uh, my bad,” Ashton stammered, not knowing what to say in the presence of Michael Clifford. Ashton searched his pockets for a one dollar bill, but found nothing.
