Carly flies with her phone pressed to her ear. She is on her weekly excursion to the city, and Dynamo talks excitedly in her ear. “I’m about two blocks away from the stronghold. You should meet me there.”
Over the years, the two have forged a partnership. She had saved Dynamo the first week. The second week he had given her a mask. Then there was a third week, a fourth week, a twenty-fifth. And counting.
Daniel patrols the airways on an almost nightly basis, but is always thankful for the help during the weekends. The people are not the only beings that don’t sleep in New York. Evil doesn’t seem to rest either. Carly has noticed the steady incline of monster sightings, but the amount is still far from unbearable. If anything, she appreciates the extra action. It certainly makes her weekends more eventful, and as long as there are baddies to pummel, she feels as if she has an obvious purpose.
“Uh-huh. Hold on. I’m almost there.” The lights shine like diamonds in front of her and no matter how often she flies between the towers, they still manage to steal her breath away. The scene leaves her more winded than the fighting does.
“You here yet?” His voice comes through her phone. Since their first encounter, he has uploaded several features exclusively for superheroes. It makes her feel more connected to the other world that she is part of, but still she hardly feels acquainted with the ways the heroes live. Most are somewhere in a secret superhero society, and she is stuck on earth. In high school. It hardly seems fair.
Carly imagines that she could be so much more heroic if she had been raised and trained in the ways the other have. Instead, she has been taught everything from Dynamo, who admittedly does know what he’s talking about. And while she has more field experience than most, she still feels like she has missed out on a rather crucial experience. If only her parents had not had such a suffocating reign on her life, she thinks that things could have turned out much differently.
“Does it look like I’m there? I’m a few minutes away. That is, assuming that I don’t get lost.” She’s fairly certain she knows the location of Dynamo’s whereabouts, but she feels the need to add the last sentence as a sort of precaution. Carly has always been a fairly good navigator and the late-night wanderings of New York have definitely improved the condition of her cognitive mappings.
“Hurry up then! I’m getting impatient.” She can almost feel him pacing, or rather flying, back and forth in excited agitation through the phone.
Carly decides to amp up the speed a notch. She still isn’t flying at maximum velocity, simply because she wants to continue marvelling the spectrum of life below her. She catches his figure in the shadows. “Be there in three…” she trails, watching as Dynamo stops his movement. “Two…” He turns to face her. Carly hangs up the phone. “One.” They are now floating face to face.
Looking at him, his favorite color is obvious. His mask gleams the same, warm gold, hardly inconspicuous in the night. His shoes also glimmer with a golden sheen. He is dressed in the rays of the sun and stands out when hovering in the shadow of a taller building.
Carly on the other hand displays the mask given to her on their second encounter. At first glance, Vertigo’s mask looks less elaborate, a simple dark blue covering over the upper half of her face. But on closer inspection, Dynamo is close enough at the moment, he can pick up on the lighter blue clouds covering the left half of the mask. The right half is speckled with stars and a sliver of a crescent moon is visible just above the right temple. Up close it is just as elegant and intricate as the metallic feathers on Dynamo’s.
“Hello,” Dynamo says, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. “Took you long enough.”
Carly rolls her eyes. “Hello to you to, too.” He looks as excited as she feels. Friday nights giver her a breather from normalcy, and while Dynamo is used to the late night battles, he only gets a partner on the weekends. Fridays provide a haven of difference for the both of them.
