One more day and Ann will be gone.
Beth is playing with her. They are having a tea party.
I'm afraid of her. What if she wants to hurt Beth? Not like me but maybe bully her?
"Greyson?" Mom sits next to me in the picnic table. We are having a barbecue. We went to a racing game and even drove some karts too. I tried to have fun but Ann just made it uncomfortable.
"You look worried," she pets my hair away from my face. "Everything okay?"
I need to tell her.
"Yeah, just want my bed back,"
She chuckles. "You will tomorrow,"
"Why haven't I heard of Ann till now?"
"Just that I didn't talk to your aunt for a while,"
"Why?"
Mom shakes her head. "It was unimportant then as it is now, I'm happy she's back into my life,"
"Ann is a good girl, why do you look like you want to strangle her?"
"Mom don't change the conversation,"
"No I'm serous, I'm sorry for not telling you about the sleeping arrangements, next time we can discuss it okay? Ann isn't at fault here,"
I shrug, "I guess,"
Mom kisses my cheek. "I love you,"
I look at her. She has always told me that but now I feel those words. I need to ask if what happened last night was wrong. Well it was, right? Because she's my cousin.
"Hot dogs are done!" Aunt Grace yells from the pit. "Steaks need more time!" Ann and Beth run to get food.
"Come on, eat with them," mom pulls me up and we get some hot dogs. I sit with the girls. Ann smiles at me like nothing happened. "Do you want to go with us later?"
"Aunt Grace is taking us to go see a orchestra! Like the one I dance to," Beth smiles at me.
She always makes me smile with her enthusiasm.
"Yeah I know, it's cool right?"
Beth nods. "Dad took us once remember?"
I nod. "Yeah they played Mozart,"
"I miss him,"
"Me too,"
"My daddy is never with me anymore," Ann frowns. "It is like he's dead too,"
I see Beth's face turn pale. Stupid Ann! I quickly go to Beth. "Shut up Ann! Don't say that,"
Beth is crying. "But he aint! You got your daddy and not me!"
Ann quickly hugs her. "Sorry!"
I pull Beth away. "Don't touch her!"
"Hey! What's wrong?" Aunt Grace and mom come by.
Beth goes to mom and cries with her.
"Ann said a stupid comment about her dad being dead," I say.
Aunt Grace slaps her arm. "Don't say that! He loves you and you know it!"
"I'm sorry! But it feels that way ever since you let him go,"
"Apologize to Beth," I say.
"Stop!" Mom yells. "I will take Beth so we can do our breathing exercises." They leave inside the house.
"Young lady, you will write Beth a letter apologizing, she is a very sensitive girl," Aunt Grace goes back to the fire. "The food is done so I will take it inside. You will do it Ann and give it to her when she's calm," Aunt Grace gets the steaks and goes inside.
"Fuck you," she says.
I don't even want to bother with her. I'm gonna go call Susana or Jenny. I need to talk to a girl about this crazy bit-
"Ah!" My hair! She pulling my hair! I fall back and she kicks me.
"Stop!" I yell. I suddenly feel all her weight on me.
Her hands go to my mouth. "Why did you say I made her cry? It was an accident!"
How the hell do I answer when you're covering my mouth?!
She gets the memo and takes off her hands but to slap me. My body freezes again.
"You made look bad!"
I look at her. She's crazy! That's it! She is mad!
"Daddy told me that we will be family anyhow but he just left," she is crying, "Grace made him do it! You know why?" She chuckles, "because she got karma back. She told your mommy that your dad cheated on her. Your mom hated my mom for telling her sister about her husband. Then turns out she was right. You," she looks at me and touches my cheek. "She ruined your parents. If my mom wouldn't have said anything, your daddy will be alive,"
"What's wrong with you? What are you talking about?"
She gets off and sits on the grass. "You're adopted asshole."
"What the hell are you saying?"
"Your daddy got you from your real mommy and gave it to Jackie. Jackie thought you were abandoned and they took you in as an orphan. But my mom knew that he cheated on Jackie and you were his baby. Your real mommy had issues so he took you in," she cleans all tears, "my mom told your mom about it at your six birthday party, turns out your real mommy was there. Jackie hated my mom for destroying her family. That's why you never saw us after,"
"But dad died when I was 9,"
"Because your Jackie caught him again with another woman, she threw him out of the house that night,"
No. This can't be right. She is just mad!
"Jackie knew that your real mom wasn't the only woman in her husband's life, so that's why she had enough that night, you guys were at the sleepover right?"
I nod.
"Then your mom came by to take you guys to the hospital. You saw your daddy for the last time in a hospital bed, he had a car accident,"
Mom told me he was drinking. Maybe he was just upset he got caught or sad he lost mom.
"We aren't cousins," Ann stands. "And Beth is just your half sister," she leaves me.
In a weird way, it all makes sense. Dad was always around ladies, but I never saw anything weird.
"Greyson?"
My mom is standing next to me. "Beth fell asleep. Are you okay?"
I stand and wipe away any dirt from my pants. "Yeah,"
"Where did Ann go?"
"I don't know,"
She touches my cheek. "Did you fall?"
"Yeah," I feel pain from my left cheek as mom's finger puts pressure on my skin.
"Be careful next time," she pats my back and directs me inside. My body feel numb. My head hurts. My stomach feels like I have a huge amount of gas. My throat has a lump.
