"Eat up or you'll have no strength for the hunt tomorrow," Niall says, shoving another spoon of grey-ish porridge into his mouth.
The hunt. The dreaded hunt. Every so often The Leaders –that's what they like calling themselves- of this place send out groups of people to forage for food and supplies, it's the only time we're aloud to go outside the fence without being forced back with words and then guns. I cringe at Niall and scoot closer to Harry.
"No thank you." I say, "Even if this was my last meal, I wouldn't put that in my mouth."
Jacinta bursts out laughing from the other side of the table and I look at her confused while Louis giggles. Jacinta squashes her face into Louis chest. Louis holds up his index finger as if to say wait. Then takes a small breath and speaks.
"Ah, That's what she said." Lou exclaims laughing lightly. I roll my eyes but laugh a little too. Good to know this place hasn't dampened their sense of humour.
When I woke up here it was like waking up in a foreign country. Everything is different. This place is run by "military officers" who were trained in case of an emergency like this. If you ask me; they have no idea what they're doing; they just want to have people here so they can order them around. They have rules like no roaming around after 8, restricted areas are restricted for a reason and my personal favourite:
No cannibalism of any sort.
I don't know how this rule came to be and I don't want to know either in case I'll be scarred for life. And then there's the rule that bugs me the most:
No wandering beyond the fence.
It's not like we don't already know what's out there. The world is taking the long road to an inevitable end. It's not that hard to see. But I guess some people don't know, some of them have spent the whole apocalypse fenced in.
"Don't you think it's weird," Liam starts as one of the leaders walks past but he doesn't notice, which grabs our attention, "That they send us out instead of them? I mean they're militarily trained. I thought we were meant to be the resistance, the survivors, the revolu-"
"You wanna survive?" The guy grabs Liam by the collar of his jumper, "then hunt and Stay. In. Line." With a little jolt Liam's collar is back in place and I look as the leader walks away. Talk shit, get hit. The unknown guy sitting next to Niall chuckles.
"Wow, you're new here aren't you?" He says, coughing uncontrollably.
"Y-Yeah," Liam starts as Niall moves back a little, "is it that noticeable?"
"New folks like you come around all the-" he coughs once more, "-time."
"Are you okay?" Jacinta asks and the man shakes his head. I look to Harry and he looks back with a worried expression.
"They're listening.." He coughs.
"Subject 381! Report to head office immediately!" The PA system rings out suddenly, and every one stops talking. The man stands up amongst everyone else who is seated and quiet. The man looks to Jacinta sadly and she stares wide eyed.
"My advice to you," he says with a croak, "r-run while you c-can-"
A range of sudden loud noise comes from the sky. Gunshots. Harry jumps from his seat and covers me with his body as we both crawl under neath the table with the rest of the group. All that can be heard is the noise of a few more gunshots and screaming. I look into his eyes and he lets out a breath.
Once the noises stop, we slowly merge from under the table to see the old man, on the floor, shot.
I can't form a sentence. Why the hell would the leaders kill off an innocent man?! In front of everyone?
Harry gently grabs my hand and I feel the warmth radiating off of him, even in this cold weather.
"Harry," I speak, "What's going on?"
"This isn't the first time this has happened. I'll explain later," he whispers, kissing the top of my head, "I promise."
I look to my friends, everyone's alright except for Jacinta. There's blood splattered on every inch of her face. She notices and starts breathing heavily and looks like she's about to scream.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey Jacinta," Louis says, holding her shoulders in his hands and looking her dead in the eyes, "You're okay, listen to me, you. Are. Okay."
"I-I can't- he just-" she starts breathing even more erratically and tears stream down her face. I see people starting to look and crowd around. She doesn't need this right now. Louis notice too and grabs her hand, leading her to the bathroom but the crowd stays, forming a circle around the old man.
"This has never happened before.." someone starts talking and I listen as Liam and Niall sit back down to cope, "They don't do this to us, they never have, so why have the started as soon as some new comers arrive? This isn't our doing! It's theirs!" He points to our table and I go wide eyed. Harry tightens his grip on my hand and starts walking, Niall and Liam follow.
"What the he is going on?" I ask and Harry just looks at me for a split second and keeps walking. I look to Niall and Liam and they look down.
"Harry, she deserves to know." Niall intervenes. Harry takes a deep breath as he stops walking.
"Tiarn," he says stepping closer to me so our faces are only inches apart, "Things are going to get bad."
