“It’s just been delayed,” David said soothingly. “It hasn’t crashed.”
“But-”
“Hush,” David said firmly, placing a finger over my lips. “Be patient.”
Sure enough, ten minutes later the announcement came through that Matt's plane had landed.
“See,” David said in a know-it-all voice. “I told you, it was just delayed.”
He leant down and kissed me.
“Excuse me, but I think I’m the one in need of comfort, not him.”
Matt's quiet voice made me break away from David.
“If you insist.”
Before I could stop him, David had leant down and planted a lip-smacking kiss on Matt's lips.
I laughed at the look of shock on Matt's face.
“How are you?”
I leant down to hug him, trying not to squeeze him too hard.
“I’m loving the bald look, by the way. It actually suits you.”
He rubbed his head ruefully.
“Well, they only shaved part of it for the operation. It looked God-awful, so I got them to shave the rest when I came around.” He gave me a wan smile. “So, you and him are…?”
He jerked his thumb towards David, who was talking earnestly with the nurse who had accompanied Matt.
I turned Matt's wheelchair and headed towards the car park.
“We’re fine. He took me away last weekend, for my birthday. We went to Cornwall.”
“He’s spoiling you, then?”
“I guess you could say that. He got me this too.” I showed him my new wrist-watch.
“Flash.” He smiled at me.
“So, how are you?” I asked him seriously.
“Argh, shut up, Triss. I want dirt, not wristwatches. We can talk about me later.”
I leant down and kissed his head affectionately.
“Well, you’re moving in with us for a few weeks. You’ll get plenty of dirt then, I’m sure. David’s insatiable.”
“What?”
“Well, I think it’s because we’re still in the ‘honeymoon phase’.” I explained. “He seems like-”
“No, I mean, why am I moving in with you?”
“Well, once the side effects from the chemo kick in, you’ll be out of it. We’re going to look after you.”
“You don’t-” Matt began, but I cut him off.
“Hush, Matt,” I told him firmly. “You’ve looked after me for years. And you didn’t have to. Now, it’s my turn.”
As I finished speaking, David pulled open the driver’s door and slid into his seat.
“So, you’re okay?” He asked Matt. “Not feeling ill yet?”
“Oh, I’m much better after that welcome.”
David chuckled.
“Just make sure your boyfriend doesn’t mind.” Matt smiled at me.
“I don’t think you’re his type, Matt,” I told him. “Besides, that’s all you’re ever getting from him. He wouldn’t dare cheat on me. He knows I’d stop cooking for him if he did.”
They both laughed.
Matt reached across and ruffled my hair affectionately.
“I missed you, kiddo.”
