Hermione climbed onto the train and tried to find a place to sit. She took in all of the students boarding the train and let out a gasp. There, right before her eyes, sat the most famous boy in the wizarding world.
Harry Potter.
She straightened her robes and fixed her hair as she began to walk towards their booth. She noticed a boy running down the train corridor, turning to people as he ran. He came up to her.
"Have you seen my toad? My names Neville by the way," he said all in one breath. Hermione shook her head no. He sighed and moved on to the next passerby a on the train.
She sighed and decided to ask Harry and the redhead next to him. She walked up to the door and acted as if she wasn't completely dying inside.
"Have either of you seen a toad?" She asked, "A boy named Neville lost one."
"No, sorry," the redhead said at the same time that Harry shook his head. Hermione noticed the boy was holding his wand and asked if he was doing a spell. He nodded his head.
"Let's see then," she said.
He muttered some words about the sun and the color yellow, followed by the words "turn this stupid fat rat yellow." The end of his wand let out a zap of light, but it only seemed to shock the rodent, and it didn't turn yellow, much to the boys discontent.
"Are you sure that's a real spell?" Hermione asked, placing a hand on her hip. The boy shrugged. Hermione went and sat down in front of Potter, still pretending that she didn't know who it was.
"I know a couple of basic spells. For example," she said, pointing her new wand at the boys glasses, "Oculus Repairo."
Harry's glasses automatically fixed themselves, and the tape that was holding them together fell to the floor.
She looked at the boy and decided now would be as good a time as any to bring it up.
"Oh my god, your Harry Potter!" She said, feigning astonishment. Harry looked sheepish for a moment, then nodded. "Im Hermione Granger. And..." she said, turning to the ginger now stuffing his face with sweets, "you are?"
"Ronald Weasly," he responded, smiling with chocolaty teeth. She cringed.
"Pleasure..." she said, standing up. The walked to the door and turned back to the boys. "You better put your robes on. I expect we'll be arriving soon." With that, she turned and went back out to the hallway. She made her way to an empty cabin and sat down, waiting to arrive at her new home. She rested her head against the window and closed her eyes. She felt the train rocking back and forth and felt at peace.
Just as she was about to nod off, the door to the cabin opened and a boy with platinum blonde hair and Hogwarts robes cane running in. He slammed the door and pulled down the shutter. He breathed heavily. He smiled and laughed to himself before finally relaxing into the seat. He let out a shout when he saw Hermione in the cabin with him. He grabbed his chest as if his heart might leap from it. Hermione frowned at him.
"What are you doing in here?" the boy asked, letting go of his chest and sitting down.
"Well, for your information, I'm allowed to sit here. It's not one of the private booths," she said, scowling at him, "Were you running from someone just now?"
He laughed to himself and sat down in the seat across from her. "Yeah, a boy 'lost' his toad, but I have it right here," he said, pulling the poor creature out from his pocket. Hermione cringed in disgust. "Don't tell him though. I promise I'm giving it back."
"My names Draco. Draco Malfoy. Pure blood." he said matter of factly. He extended his toadless hand and waited for Hermione to shake it. She hesitated before accepting.
"Hermione. Hermione Granger." she said looking down. She'd been warned not to tell anyone that she was muggle born.
She looked back up and saw that he was smiling at her. "What?" She asked, crossing her arms. he smiled brighter.
"You're a muggle born, aren't you?" He asked, the light shining in his eyes.
"Maybe," she responded looking out the window again, "what's it matter?"
"It shouldn't... but my father doesn't allow me to associate myself with your sort... so I should go," he said while standing up. His hand brushed hers and he looked at her. "I'll see you around Granger."
Hermione nodded and he walked out of the cabin, leaving her alone. She noticed a tear rolling down her cheek and wiped it away.
She felt the train begin to slow down and she looked outside to see the darkness of night.
She grabbed her wand off the bench and stood up. She was about to leave when she noticed a slip of parchment on the other bench. She picked it up and read what it said.
Just because I can't associate with you in public doesn't mean we cant be friends in secret. We just can't let anyone know.
Hermione smiled to herself and stood straighter. She already made her first friend. Granted, he didn't want anyone to know, but she still had a friend.
She walked out into the hallway and off the train. Outside, there was a giant man with a lantern and a beard standing on the platform.
"Alright you lot," he said, motioning for all of the first years to come closer, "we need to hurry or else we'll miss your sortin ceremony."
Someone in the back chuckled. She turned to see Draco. He was standing with two other boys. One was sort of chubby and the other was tall. The three of them were attempting to hide their chuckling. Draco noticed Hermione looking at him and stopped immediately. He sent her a strange look before looking away.
Hermione notice everyone else was starting to walk away from the platform, including Draco. She started walking, looking for a sign of Draco, but she had lost him.
She was going to continue walking but she was pulled away from the group by someone very strong. She was pulled into an alley. She turned around, ready to tell the person off, but froze when she saw Draco.
"You got my note?", He asked hurriedly. Hermione nodded, smiling at him.
"Good," he said, smiling, "and I mean it. No one can know about us. I already know which house I'm getting in. And judging from your obvious intelligence, you'll be getting into Ravenclaw. I'll be in Slytherin. We can't tell anyone that we're friends."
Hermione felt a pang in her heart. Her first friend and she can't tell anyone, not even her parents.
"Are you okay Granger?" He asked, looking at her, concerned.
"I'm fine...great, actually," she said to him, smiling back.
"Alright Granger, but if anything is ever the matter, you know you can talk to me?" He asked.
"Thanks Draco," she said.
He nodded and walked out of the alley, but before he got too far he turned back to her, "Hey Granger, call me Malfoy!"
He turned around and ran to the group. She still felt like he was right next to her though.
She walked out of the alley way and ran into a pole.
"Ow..." she whispered, rubbing her forehead.
She walked around the pole and ran after the group of first years.
