The first years filed into boats. Hermione looked all over for Draco but couldn't see him anywhere.
Maybe he went a different way, Hermione thought. She shook her head and frowned to herself. She couldn't constantly think about Draco. She was determined to be top of her year. If that was how muggle borns got to stay at Hogwarts then so be it. She would be the best. The boats launched off the docks and they floated silently across the lake. Within 10 minutes the boats had docked in front of the castle and the students were left gazing at the monument.
"Pretty stunning isn't it?" A voice asked from behind her. She turned and found Harry and Ron behind her.
"Yah it is..." she smiled, looking back at the castle. It was just as she had seen in the illustrations of her book "Hogwarts: A History". The castle had towers that spiraled into the sky.
Why do wizards hide this from muggles... She wondered to herself. She looked at the other first years around her. They didn't look as awestruck as she felt. The students walked through the front doors and through a series of hallways before they came across a set of large double doors. A woman stood in front of them. She had a long, aged face, and peircing eyes. She looked down at the students and her ice cold face broke into a smile for a second. Hermione noticed it. She knew she was going to like the professor already.
"Welcome to Hogwarts. This is where you will spend the next seven years of your life creating memories, but whether you make them good or bad is up to you," she said, looking around at the students. She opened her mouth to speak again, but right before she could let out a word, a boy ran to her feet and fell in front of her.
"Trevor!" he shouted, scooping up a toad from the staircase. Hermione recognized him as the boy who lost his toad on the train
How did it get in the castle...? she wondered. She shrugged and looked at the professor. She looked at him and he backed away, muttering "sorry" as he walked back to the group of first years.
"As I was saying before I was interupted," the woman said sternley, "Before you can begin making memories, you must first be sorted into your houses. They are Gryfindoor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. While you are here, your house will be like your family, and they will stand by you no matter what. Throughout the year, your accomplishments will gain you points. At the end of the year, whichever house holds the most points wins the house cup.
"Wait here. I will be back in a moment. I am going to let them know you're waiting," she concluded. She walked through the dors, leaving the students alone on the stairs.
Harry turned back to Hermione. "Well this sounds like its going to be fun. I hope we are in the same house."
"You wont be. Shes too goody two shoes for you. Probably going to be in Ravenclaw," she heard from behind her. She turned around to see Draco standing there with a snide look on his face.
"What do you want?" Ron said, sneering at the blonde boy.
"I want to introduce myself to the most famous wizard in all the wizarding realm. My names Malfoy. Draco Malfoy. And this Crabbe and Goyle," he finished his introductions and reached a hand out.
Ron snickered, and then tried to cover it up with a cough. Draco turned to him and sneered.
"Think my name's funny do you? No need to ask who you are, eh? Red hair, old books, and a hand me down robe? You must be a Weasley," he said , turning back to Harry. "I don't want you going around with the wrong sort. I can help you figure out who's who around here. What do you say?" Draco said, putting his hand out, waiting for Harry to shake it. But Harry just looked at it.
"I think I can figure out the wrong sort for myself thanks," he said, smiling. Draco's smile faded and he dropped his hand. He looked like he wanted to say something else but right as he was about to, Professor McGonagall came back. She put her hand on Draco's shoulder. He shook off her hand and walked back to the side of the group.
"We're ready for you," she said softly. Behind her, the doors opened and she led them into a large, open room. The ceiling looked like the night sky, with stars and clouds and the moon. Candles were suspended in midair. There were four long tables that spanned the whole room, with on long isle between the two middle tables. Each of the four tables had children between the ages of twelve to seventeen sitting at them. They all starred at the group of eleven year olds as they walked down the middle of the room. Hermione looked around at the faces of her future classmates.
The group stopped at the end of the isle. The professor walked up three steps and stood in front of a chair with a hat on it. Hermione looked at the long table of elders sitting in front of her. She had read about most of them in the books she bought. There were a few that she couldn't put a name to but she was sure that eventually she would figure it out. The old man sitting in the middle of the table rose. She immediately recognized him as Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster.
"Welcome to another wonderful year at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry!" he shouted. There was cheering from all around the room. "I am so happy to see all of your bright and eager faces. I cant wait for the year to begin, but before we can start our feast, we have a sorting ceremony to do. Professor?"
McGonagall nodded and pulled out a scroll from her robes. "Now when I call your name, you will come up, sit on the stool, the sorting hat will be placed on your head and you will be sorted into your house. Now, while you are here your house will be like your family. They will stand by you through thick and thin, and love you until your last breath. The sorting hat does not make mistakes, so if you do not understand why you were sorted into a house, you will figure it out as time passes."
