It was times like these that Alec wished he could just stop feeling anything at all, that everything would freeze for a moment in time. A temporary nothing to distract his racing mind from all that was going around him. His mother's incessant screams echoed off the walls of his small blue room as he sat emotionless on his bed, every word she was saying going over his head. After screaming relentlessly for 30 minutes Alec's exasperated mom left the room, hugging loudly and making some comment about trying to argue with him was like trying to argue with a brick wall. He honestly couldn't dispute that, when his brain was overloaded he shut down and didn't listen to anyone. His brain seemed to block out anyone who tried to communicate with him. He laid there wondering if this was a sign of psychotic and shook his head dismissing the thoughts.
-
It was around 2 am when he woke. He hadn't realized he'd fallen asleep until he suddenly opened his eyes and saw a small accumulation of drool on the sheets beneath him. He sat up, wiping the sides of his mouth and moved to his desk. Once Alec was awake there was no going back to sleep, his insomnia medicine had no effect on him anymore, having worn off by now. Sitting at the desk, he decided to begin a new sketch. Alec had decided at the beginning of the year to draw every person in last year's yearbook. He pulled out the heavy book from the shelf above his desk, and flipped to the marked page. Today's subject was a boy, something he'd always been fond of drawing. However, something about this boy stirred something inside of him. He hadn't remembered seeing the boy in the halls before which wasn't surprising considering Alec was in all AP classes. This boy had thick and seemingly fluffy fawn colored hair and beautiful blue eyes that were prominent even in the yearbook's terrible quality photo. He was white, not pale but not tan either, a sort of in between, with rosy cheeks and light freckles dotting his nose. He was, to say the least, beautiful. The boy, who's name read Jack, was far from Alec in appearance, the most they had in common was the curly hair, but Alec had black hair. Alec was also fair, but far paler, with green eyes, much skinnier than this boy appeared to be but not unhealthily. He began the basic outline of the boy's face. After drawing meticulously for a while Alec gave up after getting frustrated at messing up his nose once again. He walked back over to his bed and glanced at his clock, 4 am. He didn't have any electronics to mess with so no music for him, his mom must've taken them when he passed out after the argument. He laid on the bed, hoping if he squeezed his eyes shut tight enough he might be able to fall back asleep until seven. Eventually around 5 he went into a light sleep.
-
His alarm woke him back up and he dragged himself out of bed. Alec washed his hair in the sink and brushed his teeth, grabbed his bag and ran downstairs.
"Hey queer."
Alec chose to ignore this demeaning comment made by his stepbrother. His mom had remarried about three years back to a total douche bag after his biological father died of cancer. She'd never treated him the same since, choosing to place the blame of her husband's death on him. His stepdad was no better, bringing along his vacuous and demeaning son.
Grabbing a granola bar, Alec stepped out the door, put his earbuds in and walked to school. Once he arrived he was greeted by his friends Zoe and Will.
"Hey short stuff." Zoe said, swinging her arm around his shoulder, tan arm sharply contrasting his practically translucent skin . Alec had acquired this nickname years ago in 8th grade, he was still 5'4 then and Zo had outgrown him by two inches. Of course now that he was a senior he was 5'11 (late bloomer you could say) so it didn't really make sense she still called him that but nicknames stick.
"Hey Zo." He replied in the monotone voice he always sported. She shook her head, her thick brown hair falling into her eyes, the meticulously curled pieces framing her face.
"Why are you always so morose Alec it's boring. No one will ever want to date someone as depressed as you." He rolled his eyes at this, being a reoccurring argument between the pair.
"Has it ever occurred to you that some of us may not be as energetic as you at 7:30 in the morning." He remarked.
"You act like this all day though." Will piped up.
"It's always too early for me." Zoe giggled at this, brown almond eyes gleaming, and the two began their journey to class, waving goodbye to Will.
-
Now seated at their desks in the back of the classroom, Zoe turned to Alec.
"I think this year's goal should be getting you a boyfriend."
"Wasn't that last year's goal, and the year before that, and-"
Before he could go on she cut in saying, "But I know this year will be different. Boys are maturing and maybe realizing their sexualities right now so l have confidence that you will find your person." This was said with such confidence that Alec could almost believe it. Yet, he refused to fool himself into believing he could find love after all the years of being the invisible kid who's name no one even knew. He knew it was pointless to hope after almost completely alienating himself from everyone in his school.
"Sure." Alec decided to say, not feeling like arguing. Then he watched Jack walk into the room.
"Fuck." He said silently to himself, he was just as beautiful in real life as in his picture, if not more because, let's be real, those are some shit quality photos.
Alec could practically feel Zoe's eyes watching with pure enthusiasm burning a hole into his head, so he quickly turned to face her.
She merely responded by raising her eyebrows. He shot her a quick warning glance before turning to face the front of the class as the teacher cleared his throat.
"Students, I am aware this is the middle of the semester but we will be having a new student join our course. Care to introduce yourself?" Mr. Stauding nodded his head at the kid as if he were to say, go on.
"Uhm hi, i'm Jack Godemun." Alec found it strange that Jack was seemingly, perhaps solely externally, anxious, whilst simultaneously projecting an aura of pure confidence. (wow big boy word time)
"Alright Jack you can take the empty seat next to Katherine in the back."
Alec's heart stopped momentarily, that was the seat directly in front of his. As much as he hoped to talk to him he knew his anxiety would prevent him from even making eye contact as he made his way over.
Jack sat down in his seat and Alec's brain finally let him look up to see him staring directly at him.
"Oh- hi." Alec simply said, surprised by the intrigued face in front of his own.
"Hey, I'm Jack, like I said before, what's your name?" The slight accent in his voice caught him off guard as well.
"oh- uh, I'm Alec."
"Nice to meet you," he then turned to Zoe, "and what's your name?"
"I'm Zoe." She said smiling. I wish I had the same sort of confidence that she had, I figure it couldn't really hurt me.
"Sorry if it's weird that I'm talking to you, I got moved into higher classes and I don't really know anyone. Also all of my friends have completely different schedules than me so I'm all alone." he pouted.
Zoe laughs lightly, "When you say it like that you sound so sad."
Jack laughed as well, "I suppose you're right, I'll have to word it differently next time."
The teacher cleared her throat, thus ending the encounter and starting class. And so began our story. Our long, complicated story.
