The Great Mage known as Niklan, or Niko, Brightmind, sighed and looked at the three little girls sitting at the table. Next to him sat King Loran, who was drumming his fingers on the desk.
"Brother," King Loran began.
"I know, Loran," Niko quickly said. "I know. But this is all we've got. We can make it work."
"But the prophecy-"
Niko laid a hand on his brother's arm. "We'll make do with what we have."
King Loren took a deep breath and nodded. "You're right." Turning to the three girls he said, "Now, who are these three beautiful ladies?"
Niko watched as the girls introduced themselves, but his mind was elsewhere. If they were going to survive the battle foretold, all four of them were needed, not just three. He rubbed his forehead. He would have to protect them, without them knowing they were protected. Maybe he could even start working with them soon...Or should he keep looking for the fourth one?
