When James finally made it to the apartment that he and Sirius shared, it was around midnight. He unlocked the door silently with his key, trying not to wake any of their neighbors or Sirius up. They lived in a muggle area, so they both had to be careful about showing their magic.

James went inside and slipped out of his shoes and coat. He then went into the kitchen to make himself some hot cocoa. There, right in front of him was Sirius standing with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face.

"Where were you?" Sirius demanded.

"Uh..." James stalled for time to think. He didn't want to tell Sirius about Kat. "I had a thing."

Sirius raised an eyebrow. "A thing?" He knew James was lying to him and he didn't like it.

"Yeah. Sorry for missing the get-together."

Sirius looked disapprovingly at James. "I called you tons of times and Frank did too. Why didn't you answer?"

James looked at him. "You called me? I didn't hear it. Sorry." He left the kitchen and muttered a quick good night.

Sirius watched him go. He knew something was going on with James and hoped he would tell him eventually.

Kat flopped into her bed smiling. She had met this strange guy who didn't know anything about anything, yet he was very smart. He obviously needed her help. Otherwise, some evil person might sink their claws into him and take advantage of him. It was perfect because she had been bored recently, looking around for a new job but not really finding anything.

Suddenly her phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Hello Kathryn."

"Mum?"

"Yes, it is I. How are you?"

"I'm good. Why did you call me?"

"I was wondering whether you have a new job yet. I don't want my daughter to be kicked out on the streets!"

"Yes, I have a new job." Kat crossed her fingers behind her back.

"Wonderful! What is it?"

"Um... I, um, can't tell you yet! Yeah, it's a surprise. You'll find out at the annual family gathering."

"But that's months away! Come on, I'm sure you can tell me now."

"Sorry Mum, but that would ruin the surprise. I really have to go, I'm meeting up with some friends for dinner and I don't want to be late." And with that, she hung up.

Kat sighed with relief. She had survived a phone call with her mum and had only lied twice. That was a record!
