"What are you doing?"
My 8 year old brother was on top of the stairs poking the cat with a stick.
I walked out to him and took the stick.
"What did mom tell you about messing with the cat?" I said.
My brother glared at me then got up and walked off.
Jace was always like that, storming off.
I let out a sigh and picked up the cat.
I sat down on the old arm chair by the fire and began to pet the cat.
It would be another hour before my parents got home and my brother was already in a mood. great.
I let my mined wonder, I thought about the book I was reading, the seasons, anything at all.
"Sara, Help!" I heard coming form upstairs. I ignored my brother, he probably needed help with a video game.
"Sara, Help me!" He said again this time more franticly.
Still wondering what he could be doing I walked upstairs slowly. When I got to the top of the stairs I could feel a cold breeze. jace must of have opened his window. but when I got to his room, everything was a mess. his bed was in its side, the dresser was broken, And his close where everywhere, and his window was shattered.
I looked around franticly. I checked every inch of the house, but jace was no where to be found. I was about to call 911 when I noticed a trail if footprints leading out the window. I took a closer look at them. they where shaped like human feet and they where covered in mud. the weird thing about them was that they where the size of a baby's foot.
I called 911 and told them what had happened. within minutes I herd the slam of car doors.
About ten minutes later my parents can crashing through the door.
"Sara! What happened!" They yelled.
After I explained what happened they both had a look of panic on there faces.
"What, what are you hiding? Most parents in this situation would be worried sick or balling there eyes out. not panicking." I said.
They looked at one another then back at me.
"We aren't hiding anything sweetie. we are just worried about your brother. he needs to be found." My mom said.
"Your lying. you only say sweetie when your lying. what are you hiding." I said again.
My mother glanced at my dad, he shook his head.
"We'll explain later but right now we need to focus on finding your brother." He said then they both walked away.
As they left I could see something on my mothers back, but I couldn't tell what it was.
Oh well that wasn't important they had some explaining to do.After about three hours of questioning the cops finally left saying "well keep you updated."
Some help they were.
As soon as they where gone my mother said "it was good thinking for you to call the police, but in the future Sara please call us first."
"Why. The police are more equipment to find people. and you still have to explain to me the thing your not telling me." I said stubbornly.
My mother sighed then walked over to a chair and sat down.
"Come sit. this is going to be a long story." she said.
Reluctantly I sat down across from her.
"So, you know how in fairy tales there are magical creatures? sometimes they appear human and sometimes not." She said. I nodded
"Well... their real. sort of. instead of being from another world they are from the same world. and... I am one of those creatures." she finished.
There was a long moment of silence before I finally said
"I can't believe it. your fucking crazy!"
I don't usually cuss infrint of my parents but they where pushing the limit.
My mother shoock her head slowly then stud up.
When she was standing I could see something behind her but I couldn't tell what it was. the image became clearer as I kept looking.
It was a pair of butterfly wings. they where a beautiful shade of blue, and black. they where a little smaller than my mother but they looked bigger.
"I'm surrounded by crazy fairies." I said after a moment of silence.
My father chuckled.
"I am not a fairy." my mother said stubbornly. "fairies are vail and corrupt. the little devils can't even keep a simple promise."
After my mothers strange comment I asked "if your not a fairy then what are you?"
She sat back down "I am a race of half human half butterfly people. we are called the fair folk. although the Avians call us something dreadful, but that's not important. The point is, that I'm not entirely human and because of that neither are you or your brother." she said.
"So what does that have to with jace going missing?" I said playing along with there crazy.
"Well. fae blood is always dominant so you two are fair folk as well." my mother said.
I was silent. if what she said was true, that would mean... I'm not human.
I checked my back. no wings.
My father chuckled.
"Your wings are going to grow in within the next two years or so." He said.
"How do I know this is not just some dream or trick." I said.
My parents looked at each other. they seamed to do that a lot.
"Does it feel real?" Said my mother.
I nodded
"Then it's only as real as you think it is." said my father.
I gave a small nod them went to my room.
When I got there I sat in front of my large mirror and looked at my reflection.
I looked the same.
Pale skin, freckles all over my face, leaf green eyes, and dirty blond hair. ironically I had a pixie cut.i turned to check my back. i still had the same old back. so narrow you could see my shoulder blades. now i knew why.
i turned back to face the mirror.
i was a plain girl. normal. how could i be anything but human?
i shook my head.
here i was sitting in front of a mirror, looking at myself, whill my brother was out there somewhere lost. or dead.
some sister i was.
i checked the clock. it read 10:36. to late to start looking for him.
Tomorrow i would ask my parents more about the fair folk and where my brother could be.
but for now i needed to rest. i couldent start looking if i was tired.
"Tomorrow." i wispered to myself as i drifted off to sleep.
