I break eye contact with Night, and immediately head in the opposite direction from where he is standing. I search the crowd of people that had gathered at the end of the staircase until I lock eyes with Canyon. As soon as we lock eyes, she gets a concerned look on her face.

"What's wrong?" She asks as I approach her.

It's just then that I realize she is standing next to a man. He is tall and lean with dark brown hair and tanned skin. He must be her mate.

I shake off the feeling of jealousy I get when I realize she got a normal, good mate, and I respond saying "We need to talk. Now." She nods and grabs mine and her mates hand, and pulls us through her kitchen and to her pantry.

Despite the circumstances, I smile a little when we step into our old meeting place. We would always sneak in the pantry when we were younger and we needed to tell each other a secret. The smell of food masks your scent, so no one can tell you're in there, which means they won't be trying to listen to your conversation.

Canyon shuts the door, and the whole pantry goes dark. "What happened?" She asks.

"I found my mate." I say with sadness in my tone.

"Why are you sad about that? That's great news! So did I, as you've probably already figured out! His name is-" I cut Canyon off.

"It's Night Grayson." I say with a sigh. I've known Canyon so long that, even though I can't see her face, I know her mouth is hanging wide open.

"Wh-what? There's no way..I didn't even know he was here.." Canyon says in a whisper.

I try to tell her that I didn't know he was here either, but I couldn't talk. All I could do was cry.

Canyon tried comforting me, but it was no use. I was a mess.

After about ten minutes of me just bawling, Canyon said, "That's it. We're gonna sneak you out of here. The nights not over. We can still have some fun! I'll go find my mother and tell her what happened, and then we can go get some ice cream or see a movie or something."

I nod and Canyon slowly opens the pantry door. I creep out the backdoor, and Canyon and her mate go to the living room to find her mother. I step out of her backdoor and sit down at one of the chairs they have on their back patio. I thought that I wasn't going to get caught waiting for Canyon, because it was freezing outside, and everyone was inside, partying away, but boy was I wrong...

"I'm surprised to see you here." I hear a deep voice say. I jump up out of my chair and begin backing away when I see who the voice belongs to. Of course, it was Night. How long had he been standing there?! Was I too lost in thought to notice his presence?!

"Why did you run from me?" Night asks.

"I-I'm sorry..." I say.

He takes another step towards me, and I take another step back.

"Don't be scared of me. I would never hurt you." He days with a look of hurt on his face.

I ignore his statement and say, "I've heard about you. How you are a cold and miserable person. I've heard that you hate my father, and that means that you hate me."

"Just because I hate your father doesn't mean I hate you." Night responds.

"Why do you hate my father? He's a good man!" I say defensively.

"There is a lot you do not know." Night says.

I was about to say something when Canyon and her mate opened the back door, stepping out. Canyon let out a little gasp as she saw who was standing in front of me.

Night looks over to Canyon and her mate with a kind smile and says, "Ah! You must be Canyon. I'm Night Grayson, Alpha of the Grey Shadow pack."

"I know who you are, and I am not letting you anywhere near my best friend." Canyon says grabbing my hand and starting to lead me away.

"She's not going anywhere." Night responds, grabbing my other hand.

"Stop!" I scream.

They both let go and stare at me. I just start crying again. Night reaches out towards me, trying to comfort me, but I just cower away. Canyon then tries to comfort me, but I do not let her.

"I need some time alone, so I can think." I mutter, and Canyon and Night nod. Canyon grabs her mate's, whose name I still do not know, hand and they all go back inside.

I continue to cry, until I get an idea. How about I go for a run? Running in my human form always seems to clear my mind. Even though I don't want to, I rip the bottom of my silk dress, and slip off my high heels. I don't even think about the fact that it is freezing outside. All I know is that I need to run.

Canyons family's owns beautiful land that has many hills and is really fun to run on, so I just take off running. I don't know how long I run, I just know that the cold breeze on my face eases my worries and allows me to relax. After I am feeling better, I slow down and take a look at my surroundings. I am in between two hills that I do not recognize. I have never been to this part of her land before, and that kind of scares me, because when we were kids we used to explore these hills all the time. I must have went really far, and I know that I should probably head back to her house...but I can't. I'm too exhausted from all that running, so I just sit down and begin to think about Night, and how he didn't seem as scary as everyone had made him out to be. I think about him for a while, still not registering how cold it is outside, until I begin to feel my eyes close. "A 20 minute nap isn't THAT big of deal!" I think to myself. So, I give in to sleep, and use the cold, dead grass as my pillow.
