Naruto - Minato one-shots

2- wings

AU where everyone has wings, and they are either the element they specialize in, the thing of their village or feather, with the occasional leather.

Minato's pov

It was the first day I was getting my genin team, and I am excited. They were all new to me, except for Kakashi, and the fact that I have seen them around the village, along with everything the files told me about them. It was still not something I liked, having files for them, but it was a necessity, and it was helpful for if you were given a genin team while in battle or out on the field.

I let my wings stretch out behind me, enjoying the feeling of them wind between them, before letting them fold closed, knowing the first thing I'm going to do, is take the team for a flight, and then groom them. I don't care how they protest, I won't let them tell me no, unless they physically stop me. None of them have taken care of their wings, based on the pictures I have and the few glimpses as well.

The first to arrive is Kakashi, no surprise, followed by the only girl,Rin. After the introduction, we settle in to wait, cause everything I have says Obito, the final member of our team, is always late to everything, though it really isn't his fault. I wonder how he manages to find trouble everywhere he goes, but figure it's just something he can do and not to question it. 

I spend the time waiting, to study the other two's wings and find - to my dismay - that they are worse than the pictures showed, and I can feel my fingers itching and twitching, wanting to straighten out the feathers, leaves and other stuff aside. It was no surprise to me, that Kakashi's wings were made of lightning, nor that Rin's were feathers. My wings are the odd ones, having two of the types mixed together. 

"Sensei? Are you ok?"

I turn to face Rin and give her a small smile, before actually answering, watching as she relaxes and let's the warmth and the situation go.

"Perfectly, just wondering how late our last member will be. Can't start until he gets here."

I stretch and open my wings again, shaking them out as the wind inside messes up a few of the leaves, and I grumble as I reach out to fix them, wincing as my wings let me know how sore they are. Lot of missions have required stealth, which requires me to not only not fly, but to hide and cover my wings in whatever way I could. Really puts a cramp on ones style, ya know?

We wait an hour, and then a boy races up to us, panting and trying to explain in the same breath. I simply wait, and look over his wings, finding to my dismay the fire is darker and messier than in the pictures. Do they no longer teach kids how to help and fix their wings? What is this even?

I sigh, glancing at all of their wings again, before waiting for them to fall in line. It takes them a few minutes, since they are all talking just a little bit, and I can already see the future, with these kids all grown up and bickering with each other, one getting married to the Rin, while the other finds himself a nice girl from a different team or group, maybe they all get together, and me watching on, pride and exasperation surrounding me.

"Alright, now that we're all here, the first thing we are going to do is a flight. I know there's usually a test, but I haven't had a chance to fly in forever and I like this way better. Can you all fly more or less stably?"

They all look at each other, before carefully taking off. Kakashi looks fine, and Rin wobbles slightly, but Obito doesn't even open his wings. I grin, already knowing what this means and set a hand on his head. He locks eyes with me, shame and self-hate in his eyes. I give him a small grin, before glancing at the other two and silently asking them to land.

"You want to know a secret?"

I grin as all three perk up, and stretch my wings.

"Not only are my wings something considered taboo, I didn't learn to fly until 15. You're dad, Obito, didn't learn until after he became 14. There's nothing wrong with being unable to fly. The greatest of us just don't learn till later. Don't let your dad know I told you, he'd skin me alive."
