Susie got on the school bus to get home and sat down, a little ways away from Sylvia, that stupid mean girl that stood her up at lunch in front of everyone, and then made a fool of her during recess. What had she done to her to deserve that? She was also dreading going home, because her father was probably drunk and would get angry with her again. Her father, Roger was almost always drunk and angry when she came home from school.
Today would probably be no different. At least school was her escape from it all. She got off the bus in front of her house, and walked down the driveway, towards the front door. She hesitated a moment. "Maybe he won't be so drunk today?..... Nah, that's highly unlikely." She thought, just dreading what her father was going to do to her today. She finally went in. "Maybe if I go up to my room quietly, he won't notice me...." She thought, hesitantly. She sort of tiptoed past him, while he sat on the couch in the living room. She finally got to the foot of the stairs, when she heard his voice pierce the air. "Where do you think you're going, bitch? You're late again, and you know what happens when you come home late...", He said, in an eerily calm voice. She froze on the stairs, and looked towards the living room.
"Susie?! Didn't you hear me, ya little shit?", He spoke again, in a slightly angrier tone. She heard his footsteps, and looked away. "I'm not going to let you touch-" She stopped as he grabbed her by the collar of her sweatshirt. "You didn't show anybody your neck, did ya?", He huffed over her shoulder, his beer-breath blowing in her face. The night before, he had slashed her neck with a shard of a broken beer bottle. She struggled a bit. "No. Just... leave me alone for once..!", She tried to break from his grip.
"Sure, I'll leave you alone... AFTER I'M FINISHED WITH YOU!!" with that, he yanked her up by the front of her shirt, and threw her against the wall. She put her left elbow out a bit, and crushed it against the wall. She shot back, in pain, and her dad then stood over her. "Y'know, IT'S YOUR FAULT SHE'S DEAD...! Now, don't dare tell anyone at your school about this, ya hear?!", He growled. "Y-yes sir..", She said quickly. He went back into the living room and she sat there for a couple minutes, trying to think about what he said before finally getting up, and going up to her room. He was talking about her mother, who had died of cancer during one spring when she was three and a half. Ever since then, her father had started getting drunk and beating her nightly, by the time she was in first grade. All of it had gone unnoticed.
