'Shelter your eyes from the sun and wait for the birds to fly by'

It's currently 00:03am but I heard the song and needed to write this. It's set in the same world as that other one shot - I'll be lost until you find me. It's the one where hayley and Taylor are sitting on the roof.

"I just want you to know, it's okay," I said to him. He had messed up his presentation that he worked so hard on, and I felt nothing but regretful for not being able to stand up for him; especially when it was my friends. It was a hard feeling to put into words. There was something about him that just told me, he's the one. It sounds cliché, but sometimes feelings are cliche because they've happened to too many people.

"Can we go somewhere?" His eyes were lonely and far from reality, so it seemed like the right move to escape this building. The school day was going to end in 10 minutes, so waiting around idly for the bell to go just so we won't get told off didn't sound appealing. I took his hand, and started walking.

He let me take him in silence. No questions, no nervous looks around, no slowing down. He trusted me.

We ended up in the park. A green field, littered with short trees and a concrete path that didn't seem to ruin the landscape. His first response, was to walk over to a tree and sit down, so I followed.

"I like your smile," the words left my mouth as a force of habit. Saying words without thinking about the consequences.

"Even introductions need to last a while," his words were closing me off, even though he let out a small chuckle.

"Sorry...sometimes I don't know if it's right or wrong to say something. My mouth has a mind of its own," I giggled. He turned back towards me, not very visibly, but I noticed him unfolding his arms, and adjusting his position.

"Am I wasting your time?" I asked quietly. He took a minute to reply, which made my nerves build on each other. He lightly shook his head, before looking back up at me.

"You and your friends, I used to think you were all heartless," why he felt the need to reflect on my friends' personalities in comparison to mine, I wasn't too sure. "I don't know how to feel about you,"

Silence took over, until he broke it again.

"But in the end, it seems like everything is worse when you're gone,"

The way he weaved his fingers into the grass with such delicacy made me want to hold him and never let go.

The moment was broken by him quickly looking up at the sound of laughs. The rest of the cheerleaders that happily embraced the negative stereotype, out in their usual routine. Walking through the park towards the mall.

He sheltered his eyes and waited for them to pass.

"I know I said we barely know each other, but I...I don't want you to leave," once they had passed, he uncovered his eyes and it came to my attention, warm tears were dripping down his cheeks. I shook my head and held him, just like I had imagined a few minutes prior.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I don't know what I'm feeling," I didn't let go, even when his body relaxed.

"There's so much I could say right now, but all I can think of is telling you that it's all okay,"
