One of the first books I read and enjoyed that didn't have romance, as it's main theme. Follows Beckham O'Neil, a teen still in the foster care system, as he joins a new school after moving in with yet another foster family, who turn out to be part of the school's faculty.
I love this story, growing up quite privileged in the sense that I've always had a large family and a sense of belonging albeit growing up desi in one of the more posh areas of England; this story shows me a new perspective, one I've never had the opportunity to see from. As cliché as it sounds along with this story and a childhood filled with Tracy Beaker and the Dumping Ground, I considered a career in social work, however growing up brown there are only a few right answers to the question 'what do you want to be when you grow up?'
The story is such a feel good, heartfelt read, always puts me in a better mood knowing that yet another child (I know this one's fictional) in the system is being looked after and there are good souls out there. Media is so focused on the dark side of children on the streets and in the system; this story shines such a new light on everyone surrounding foster care. Similar to The Fosters in showcasing details of the foster system except not as dramatic and you don't have Callie Foster running to everyone's aid thinking she's the neighbourhood's friendly Spider-Man with a law degree.
But seriously, I encourage everyone to read this one, if possible, I would make it part of the English syllabus in high schools, for that's when teenagers are the most in need of education on how to be a better person and not succumb to powers of peer pressure.
everytimeiseeyou143 honestly, the highest of praises to you, I don't know who you are or your background but I just want you to know, this story simultaneously touched my heart and educated me for the better so thank you.
