The room fell silent. No one said a word as the phone kept ringing. "What do I do?" Alfred asked looking at Messer. "A ringing phone must be answered." He answered him and looked at Flak. "Call tech and tell them to run a trace on the phone now." It was now or never to try and get a location on this kidnapper and they didn't have much time. "Alfred you need to answer it and keep them or whoever it is on the line for at least 40 seconds so we can get a trace. Put him on speaker. I know you can do it." Alfred nodded and answered the phone, his hands shaking. "Hello... I delivered the money just like you asked. Now where is my boy?" "Now Alfred, is that anyway to talk to someone? It would be a shame if your boy ended up on the end of a knife because of your words." The voice was distorted. It sounded like a robot mixed with a human but still you could hear the confidence behind it. "I very much appreciate the money that you have graciously sent to me however that is not enough for me to send over your golden boy..." Messer mouthed 10 seconds to Alfred. Flak still had the tech guys on the phone, and they were trying furiously to locate where the call was coming from. "Now I want you to do for me one more favour. One important thing." "Yes, yes anything. What do you want me to do?" "Oh Alfred. The favour is not for you. It is for Detective Messer. Hello Detective. By now the trace you put on the call should be done. I am guessing that you must be pretty happy." Messer looked at Flak as he handed him a paper with an address on it. "if I were you, I would be running because I know where you are." Messer had a smirk on his face. "Oh, should I now? Ask your techs to check again. Sometimes accidents do happen." For some reason it sounded like he was smirking on the other again. Flak asked them again and the happiness from his face drained away and was replaced by shock and anger. "The location is moving Messer. He is rerouting the call through every country at his own will."
Flak cut the call and slammed his fist into the desk. "That did not sound very delightful. You see detective I knew sooner or later Alfred would go to the police. He would ask for the best and he would get you. Now detective you are going to do me a very important favour and before you say no and started throwing your pathetic words at me just remember who I have with me." Messer looked around the room. You never bargain with kidnappers. That is the first rule they teach you. Right now, he did not have an option. "Fine, what do you want me to do?" There was a small laugh at theother end of the call "I knew you would comply with me. If you want to find me, if you want to deliver justice then your search begins within the casefiles of a certain murdered girl." "Which murdered girl? You know how many we could be looking at?" "I do know. Women in this city aren't treated thebest. That's the life a lady has to face. Either give in to a man or be killed. It was the same in this situation and I think it is time that the father of thegirl deserves to know the truth. Don't you Mr James." "What do you mean?"Alfred asked. "Explain yourself." "I think the detective knows all too well. Now that case was solved, as you would put it, in 2 months. Unfortunately, I don't want to keep Logan here for so long. We will compromise and I will give you one week to find out the real truth. If you cannot solve the case by then, you will have another member of the James family to investigate. Time is ticking detective. Do not disappoint." With those last words the call wascut and the room was again left in silence. "What did he mean detective? What did he mean I deserve the truth?" Mr James asked as he approached Messer."Obviously this person believes that your daughters murder wasn't solved, that the true killer is still out there." Messer looked at the captain "We need to reopen that case and see what the other detectives missed. There must be something there that could lead us to the kidnapper." The captain nodded "May be there is something that we can use but you know as well as I do that for us to officially reopen a case we have to have a reason to open it up and this isn'ta viable one" he whispered to Messer "However, I want you to do this quietly. Undercover. I don't want you to alert any of the other detectives who worked on the case, not until you find a reason to officially reopen the case. Do you understand Messer?" Messer nodded in agreement and walked over to Alfred who was now sitting down with his head in his hands. He was mumbling to him self before Messer stopped him "I am going to need your full cooperation if we are to get to the bottom of this and find your son and the person responsible for all of this. Can I count on you Alfred?" All he got was a soft reply of yes but that was all he needed. He motioned to Flak to follow him out of the office but just before they left Alfred picked up his head and spoke "Do you think he is right? That my daughters killer is still out?" "That's what I am going to find out and if he is right.... I will make sure justice is served."
