who took her from me?

"THIS HAS KATHERINE WRITTEN ALL OVER IT, DAMON." Stefan sighed, shifting on his feet as he looked his brother over.

Damon shook his head. "Katherine's in the tomb, trust me, I'm the one that shut her in it."

"Did you?"

"Did I, what, Stefan?" Damon spat, his look turning hateful at his brother's insinuation.

"Well, I can't imagine you'd leave her alive after all this time."

"She's in the tomb," Damon muttered, looking down at the ground briefly but not denying Stefan's words. "But she did say something to me right before I shut her in. She said Elena was in danger."

Stefan scoffed, looking at his brother incredulously. "What, and you didn't think to ask her to elaborate?"

"Sorry I didn't stick around to ask the woman that ruined my life how to save her carbon copy, little brother."

Stefan shrugged his words off, not thinking twice about them in his panic to find Elena. "We have to go talk to her."

"That's a bad idea, Stefan. She'll get inside your head and negotiate her way out, and then she'll kill everyone."

"It's Elena."

Damon leaned forward and glared at his brother. "If you let Katherine out of the tomb, I'll kill them both myself."

He walked off, getting into his car and looking at his brother's wide-eyed stare with a glare. He knew they both heard the truth in his words because he'd meant them, with everything in his soul. Even Stefan had to see that.

Damon scowled as he drove down the highway, feeling Stefan looking at him from the passenger seat. He glanced to his brother and shrugged. "What,"

"I'm just a little confused as to why you're helping save Elena when you threatened her a few hours ago."

"I'm not doing it to save Elena, that's literally the last thing I want to do." Damon scoffed, rolling his eyes. "And can we not do the whole road-trip bonding thing? It's too cliché."

"Come on, Damon. At least tell me why you can't stand Elena." Stefan shifted a little to look at his brother head-on, watching him tense up at the prodding statement.

Damon bit the inside of his cheek and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. Could he tell Stefan the truth? Would he be able to watch the only person from his past finally leave him when he heard the poisonous thoughts that consumed him daily?

Could he tell his brother that he simply couldn't stand the sight of Elena, no matter how different he claimed her to be from Katherine Pierce?

Damon cleared his throat and glanced at Stefan. "I got a tip about Elena's kidnappers. They were looking for some guy named Elijah– he's a bit of a legendary vampire– or so I've heard." He quickly tacked on the end, swallowing harshly.

Stefan looked at Damon warily, the abrupt subject change not going unnoticed by him, though he left it unsaid. "So, what, do you think they just got the wrong girl?"

She sighed as she looked out the small oval window of the airplane. Her mind was numbed with thoughts of what-ifs, what could be, what should have been. Those questions had dampened her spirit over the decades, but none more so than now as the airplane turbines rumbled her mind into the past.

Her time had come to go home and face the evils she'd been protected from for so long. Klaus would make sure she got back to him because no matter how old he was, facing her wrath was not something he wanted to do.

It had been so long since she'd seen him, since she had been in his arms like she had before she was run off and murdered. She knew he was alive, or at least undead, and leaving bodies in a trail of destruction behind him. She sent people to clean up after him because even though she couldn't return to him just yet, she would make sure he'd live long enough to see her well and alive with the infamous vampire family.

Her loyalty to the Mikaelsons came easy and her relationships with them did as well. It was easy to fall into a routine with the ruthless family of vampires who taught her how to get what she wanted over time.

With Kol came the hunger, the desire to have power over humans, and the unquenchable thirst for blood that came with that power. With Elijah came tranquility, trust, and an understanding that her loyalty lied with their family in every way.

With Klaus came an unexpectedly close friendship. They were family to one another in ways his own wasn't, and though it came in the form of idle threats and petty insults– it worked. She had, at some point, become his lackey of sorts. They made for a frightening duo, that much was certain.

With Rebekah came the sisterhood, the bond of two women that hadn't had any other girls rooting for them before. Their bond was truly unbreakable, no matter how loyal she was to Klaus. He'd tried to come between them, but quickly faced the consequences of it. She, more than anyone, understood Rebekah's quest to find a soulmate in their long lives as she wanted nothing more than to reunite with hers.

She'd been with the family since she died, never once tried to stray from their ruthless ways or their brutal displays of love for one another as much as they denied it. It was her attempt at normal while she waited to go home to her love.

When they got a phone call from one of Klaus's minions, she knew her time had finally come.

There was a doppelgänger. The very same girl who had ruined her life in the first place reincarnated as a sweet schoolgirl that had the same allure to make everyone swarm to protect her just as Katherine Pierce once did. All but the man she'd spent so many decades searching for, and he was right in the middle of it whether he wanted to be or not.

And now, she was going back to where it all started. Fulfilling her dreams, and her promises. All she had to do now was make it back to him alive.
