It was a blizzard outside the night Orla Mae Shelby was born. A true white Christmas. Just after midnight, Orla's mother gave birth to a beautiful little girl. She had jet black hair and the most stunning blue eyes. Her mother couldn't help but fathom at the striking resemblance that Orla and her older brother Tommy held, therefore, Tommy was to name her.

Tommy was 13 when Orla was born. He knew his mother was having yet another baby, but he wasn't too concerned, that was women's business. Tommy along with his brothers were slowly trying to work their way in the infamous gang, the Peaky Blinders. The young men were more concerned with the smokes and booze they could steal than any education. Tommy was a ladies man, even at the ripe age of 13. Thomas was stunning. With his dark locks and icy blues, Tommy could get any girl that he wanted. Little did he know that as soon as he laid eyes on his little sister, that would all change.

In the early morning of Christmas day, Tommy's Aunt Polly woke him up to tell him that he has another sister and his mother wanted to see him. As soon as Tommy laid eyes on the beautiful little girl, he was infatuated. He wondered how a girl could look so much like him when he was a boy! Tommy's mother brought him close and passed the baby into his arms and told him that it was his job to name his baby sister.

Tommy sat beside his mother for what felt like hours before he finally decided on a name. His mother knew that her son wouldn't take this assignment lightly. Thomas Shelby was a thinker. He never jumped the gun or skipped steps. Tommy was precise and extremely careful, which his mother always found intriguing. Tommy wondered at why his mother had chosen him to name her youngest daughter. She looked odd, he thought. She reminded him of an old man with the wrinkles on her skin. However, she was so beautiful. The young man pictured her to be a princess one day. He wasn't sure why, but he imagined her as one. Looking up from his sister, tommy smiled at his mother. "Mum.... I think I want to call her Orla Mae" In the Irish language, Orla means golden princess. Mrs. Shelby laughed, " Oh Tommy, I think she looks like a princess, too".
