I sat on the edge of my bed, staring intently at the two packed bags on the floor in front of me.This was it, my parents were asleep, no one would stop me from leaving. Right here, right now, nothing was standing between Judy and I... Except for myself.
As angry as I was, I just couldn't convince myself to stand up, grab the bags, and go.
I palmed my forehead. "C'mon, Angela, this is it. The moment where you become an adult, take your life into your own hands, and fight for the woman you love..."
I felt a hint of determination flood through me as I slowly got to my feet. That determination grew as I bent down to grab my bags.
And, by the time I snuck out the window, my mind was set: I was leaving and never coming back...
I walked through the breezy, night air, the sounds of crickets chirping off in the distance. The peacefulness of the night eased my heartbeat.
'I really did it... After all these years, I finally did it...' I thought as I came to a stop in front of Judy's house.
I noticed all the lights were off. But, my newfound determination pushed me up the stairs, right in front of her door.
With a tight breath, I knocked three times on her door, quickly looking down the street to make sure I wasn't followed.
After a minute, the door opened, Judy's shocked, tear-y eyed face waiting for me on the other side.
I couldn't help but smile at the sight of her.
"A-Angela? How'd you get here..?" She asked.
"Judy, I love you, and nothing will ever stand in our way... I want to be with you for the rest of my life and I'll do anything to make that happen." I replied.
She smiled lightly. "Then, why don't you come inside? You look like you could use a place to stay."
I grabbed my bags and headed inside without any hesitation. This is what I've always wanted... Freedom to be who I was and to love whoever I pleased.
Judy helped me set my bags in her bedroom before sitting down on the edge of her bed, patting the spot next to her.
I sat down, the warmth of her body radiating next to me. "Even if it was just a few hours, I missed you so much..."
She blushed, taking my hand in hers. "Me to... I thought that was it, that I would never see you again... It was the scariest moment of my life and I've been in three different car accidents."
I chuckled lightly, staring deep into her eyes. "I'm here now... And that's never going to change..."
Her blush grew as she leaned in, meeting my lips in the middle for a warm kiss, pressing her forehead against mine afterwards.
"Will you stay with me then..?" She asked in almost a whisper.
"For as long as you'll have me..." I replied.
She smiled as she kissed me again, leading me down onto her bed, the fire in our hearts keeping us warm all night...
The next morning, I sat at the kitchen table while Judy made breakfast.
"This is really nice." I said.
"What's that?" She asked.
I glanced over at her. "Waking up next to you... Eating breakfast with you... Just being able to be around you without any fear... Knowing that I'll get to do all those things forever..."
She threw a smirk over her shoulder. "Y'know, I was just thinking that same thing."
I chuckled a little as she set a plate of bacon and eggs in front of me.
"The food smells great." I said as she took the seat across from me.
She smiled. "Thanks, I just hope it tastes good to."
I took a bite, nodding my approval.
She laughed lightly. "Good to know I haven't lost it."
I joined her laughter, enjoying the rest of the morning in her company...
As afternoon hit, we were joined by Rex in the barn, looking over Meredith, making sure everything was ready for the big, final race against Ronnie.
Judy and I laid on the floor beneath her, bleeding the brakes, while Rex pushed the pedal.
"How's it feelin'?" Judy asked Rex.
"Still a little stiff." He replied.
That's when we heard someone clear their throat, interrupting our work.
I peered out at the barn door from my spot underneath the car, seeing a pair of dirt covered loafers standing a few feet in front of Meredith.
I froze when I heard his voice.
"Excuse me, I was wondering if you've seen my daughter?" My dad asked.
Rex stepped out of the car. "Uh, no, sir, I can't say that I have."
"Mhm, is that so? Well, what about the woman she's been running around with?"
Judy shot me a quick glance before rolling out from under the car. "I'm right here."
"So I see, have you seen my daughter?"
"No, why?" Judy asked.
"Well, it would appear that she's run away. And my first guess would be that she's foolishly come back here." My dad replied.
I saw Judy shift her weight before answering. "Sorry, Mr. Price, but I haven't seen her since you dragged her out of here last night."
My dad was quiet for a second before letting out a harsh laugh. "You two must think very low of me. I'm not as naive as my daughter. Why don't you just tell me where she is and we can avoid anymore trouble."
I rolled my eyes at my dads words.
"Sorry, but we ain't seen her." Rex said.
"If that's how it's going to be, I'll just have to come back with the police. We'll see if they buy that phony story." My dad said, turning on his heal.
He stopped at the door. "Don't stray to far now, I wouldn't want either of you to go missing before I find my daughter."
Then, he was gone, just as quickly as he came.
I laid still under the car for several long minutes before finally forcing myself to roll out and stand up.
Rex and Judy shared a look before glancing at me.
I rubbed my arm nervously. "I'm sorry about that... Maybe I should just go... Save you guys the trouble."
Judy walked up to me, taking my hands in hers. "No way, I'm not letting you leave with him. You're an adult who can make her own choices. It's time he learned that."
"Yeah, let him bring the police, they'll say the same thing." Rex added.
I smiled warmly at them. "Thank you..."
Judy placed a soft kiss on my lips. "Don't worry, I won't let anyone take you away from me again..."
I kissed her again. "Good, because we still have a race to win..."
