Winter 2020

The Gilbert girl sat at the edge of her bed, a blanket pulled up to her neck and a scarf wrapped around her neck. Since her aunt Jenna and Jeremy died, she had been a wreck. Never left the house, rarely spoke with her friends. You can only imagine how freaked out Damon was. She hated this, sulking. And she wanted to change.

Elena threw the blanket off and shivered as the cold hit her exposed skin. The house was freezing, but she had been too lazy to get up and turn the heat on.

She picked her phone up and opened it for the first time in what seemed like months. Multiple missed calls showed up from Damon, and she had more voicemails than she would like to admit. But was she going to call back? No. Not right now, at least. Right now she was going to go to The Grill, maybe get a few drinks before she had to deal with reality once again.

Being around people she didn't know would be good for her, at least for a few hours she could let loose and forget about the world just outside the door.

This was a first for her, not caring. It was like she had completely shut her emotions off, if that was even possible for a human.

Gathering up her things, she headed out into the cold.

Right away, she thought about heading back inside to the comfort of her own home. Leaving after months of solitary confinement, it felt weird to feel the soft snow under her feet.

Elena struggled to even clean her own car, ice had made it's way onto her windshield.

But once she got to The Grill, oh boy, was she happy. The warmth from the building satisfied the cold that had seeped into her bones, and just before she settled down at her seat she noticed a tall, familiar boy working the bar, Matt Donovan.

She just prayed, and hoped he wouldn't notice but with her luck, he noticed the minute she pulled up. Much to the girl's surprise, he didn't call anybody. Not Damon, nor Stefan. Although, if Damon found out he would be livid.

The brunette looked over the menu, not feeling very hungry so she just order a Vodka.

Vicki Donovan was her waiter, of course. Elena didn't mind. She hadn't seen Matt's sister in years since she had gone to stay with their mother as she recovered from her drug addiction.

"Nice to see you again, Elena," Vicki knew of Jeremy Gilbert's death, one of the hardest things her brother had to tell her.

Just as she was unpacking her stuff, she got the news. Her heart had sunk. The boy she loved was now 6 feet under with his Aunt, and Elena was all alone.

Sure, she had other relatives, but none that she confided in. Except Alaric, and he wasn't even blood related... But she looked at him as another father.

Elena nodded as Vicki took her order down, "Listen," The Donovan girl started, "I'm sorry about Jeremy."

If Elena had a dime for every time someone apologized for her brother's passing, she would be rich. Truthfully, she hated it, having these people apologize when it wasn't their fault. Besides, apologizing wouldn't bring him back; They should just hold their breath.
