Daddy presses the doorbell and I'm literally dying inside. My heart's beating too fast and I'm looking everywhere except the gate.
"My friend, stop misbehaving oh" Joseph whispered. I just glared at him and gave him a long hiss. (Only naijas fit understand).
Finally someone opens the gate and greets us. Daddy did all the boring introductions and we were ushered in . The house always wows me. I know that the English is one kine but mehn!!. The house is beautiful. Maama is a flower freak. Flowers everywhere!!! Think of any flower and you'll find it. Roses, hibiscuses, lilies and many many others. Some were even imported. She takes really good care of them Sha, that's why they remain beautiful.
"My people are here oh!" She came out of the house with a huge smile. "Maama!" Didi screamed and ran to meet her. She caught up with Didi halfway and carried him and gave him a big hug. "Oh, my baby is all grown" she said laughing. We all chorused our greetings and she hugged us each with one hand. "Oh my. Darling you're now a big girl oh" she said looking at me. Thank God for my melanin oh, if not ehn!.
Yeah I'm a true definition of a brown skin girl.. Nappy curls, full nosed and lips glory. Brown eyes, more than average height. The only thing missing in my life right now are those mad curves. I have curves though but barely noticeable. People tell me I have a model like body but I want a Khloe Kardashian's body.
"Come in please, come in", she said while walking away. The love my Didi has for the woman. I haven't even introduced her sef. Dr Mrs Ogechi Lucia Njoku, popularly known as Maama by both young and old is the reason for the season. Forget the nonesense grammar there but it's true. She's the sweetest human on the planet. She's beautiful, sweet, nice, understanding, calm, graceful and in fact, think of any positive adjective and add there. She's a petite, light skinned Anambra woman who got married to an Enugu man. She is just one of a kind. You can't help but love her. She helped my mum to babysit us when my mum had to go back to school. Didi was just six months then. That's how Didi got so close to her.
"Feel at home my lovelies, a ma bia" she puts Didi down and starts walking towards the kitchen with Didi hot on her trail talking in a way only toddler can and Maama was seriously listening to him. Her love for this boy ehn.
That one isn't my problem sef. I'm just looking around like a mad person expecting one human being to just come in. I got really tired of looking around and Joseph just dey look me like I be mumu. I just weak.
I just stood up and look for where to charge my phone. One thing I love about this house, there is always light. (I know what my fellow Nigerians are thinking). They have inverters and a bad ass Lister generator, so there's nothing like power failure.
"So I'm warming up the food, I've being expecting you since 1pm." Maama said pouting and cleaning her hands with a kitchen towel. "Yes Maama we know, but it's like we..." Mummy was interrupted by a happy running Didi.
" Mummy, mummy look what Maama gave me. He shoved a happy hour juice pack at mum's face. "Awwn, have you told her thank you?" Mum asked. " Yes I did and guess what?' he asked. I rolled my eyes knowing what will come next. "What?" My mum asked amusingly. "She said she is going to give me the whole carton" There! The boy just said it. I knew that was going to happen. " Thank you Maama" Mummy said smiling.
Every now and then she still tells me how grateful she is to Maama and how she wished there were more people like her.
I was about to ask a question where our Lordship (rolls eyes) interrupted both Maama and I "Doctor, where is everybody?" I don't know why but for some reason, Daddy is the only one I've seen that calls Maama, Doctor. Sure it's her title but even her students call her Maama. (Yes she's a PhD holder and a lecture at unilag, she was even H.O.D one time like that).
"Oh my dear, daddy is presently out of the country. Sydney and Kelsey are in school, Chelsea is doing her service in Ogun state, she was even here yesterday and Michael went out with his friends." Maama said. They were three more names missing but I know where the first one is, Music ( I'll explain later how that name came about) is married with three children, so obviously she's in her husband's house. So that leaves two. She has seven kids.
"Ma, what about Anita?" Joseph asked. I looked at him with that I-know-what-you're-thinking look and smiled. He had and still has a mad crush on Anita but which never boy won't?? She's a cliche definition of perfection. She's light skinned, almond eyed with honey brown Iris, with a round face, with curves in the right places and a really beautiful character to match. Maama really rubbed off on her children.
"Oh, she travelled. She's writing her Post UTME next week. So she went to stay with G-mummy". She replied. That means it's still the UNN she's being dreaming about because G-mummy is a professor at UNN."Joseph, what about you? When's your post UTME? She asked. "Maama I've gotten admission oh" He replied happily. "Wow, congrats." She said. "Thank you ma." He replied. " But public schools have not started giving admission, what school did you apply for?" Maama questioned. "Afe Babalola, ma." He said smiling widely. I don't know why he's so happy with his choice. Personally, I hate Private universities. "That's good, work hard oh." She advised.
"Maama, where is Uncle Junior?" Didi asked the long awaited question. Sometimes, it's like he can read my mind. "My dear, honestly I don't know" Maama said shaking her head. "That boy wants me to scatter his head for him" she muttered. " I'm coming, let me get my phone and call him" she said while standing up.
"Mummy I'm back oh" someone shouted as they got close to the sitting room. " Oh, he's back" she said in an amused voice.
"Mummy, where are you na", "I'm in the sitting room." She answered him. The footsteps get closer and the butterflies in my tummy are doing some major gymnastics. He comes in, typing away on his phone. He looks up and you could tell he's surprised. "Uncle Junior!" Didi screamed and jumped on him. After much anticipation, the love of my life is standing in front of me in flesh and in spirit.
