...Emily is officially one!
I'm making my way down the stairs with her in my arms when Jamie appears at the bottom step with a huge Pepper Pig balloon on a string, singing his rendition of Happy Birthday.
In a flash her tired head pulls from my shoulder to level towards him. "Ah!"
The happiness in his gaze is so powerful that it causes a smile to pull at my face when I join in on his singing.
Emily babbles a string of jumbled up words when we head towards the living room where I spent most of last night dressing it up. Confetti balloons. Pink and white streamers. Banners. Flashing fairy lights.
I went crazy.
Jamie swoops in to grab her from my arms when she signals for him. He kisses her curly head. "Oh, happy birthday, my beautiful princess."
Emily points towards the fairy lights. "Uh, uh!"
He heads over there. "You want to see?"
I drag a few presents out of the sack while he takes her around the room to show off our hard work. It's a good job that he's so tall, otherwise the fairy lights would be draped across the back of the couch. "Look Emmy, so many presents. You lucky girl!"
Jamie puts her on the floor to lift her up by his hands to let her toddle my way. "The birthday fairy definitely visited you last night, Emmy."
I catch her on a giggle when she falls into my arms to move so she's sat with her back resting on my belly. "This one is from mummy. I love you so much, baby."
We tear into it.
"Ahhhhh," she squeals at the sight of Peppa Pig on the wrapping paper, throwing the new soft book to the side of us.
My eyes go towards Jamie who's helplessly laughing on the floor. I huff. "Your sister warned me that this would happen."
I tug at the wrapping but she scrunches her fingers tighter around it. "Distract her with something else."
Jamie pulls out his gift. It's a big one. "Look at this one."
The excitement in his tone grabs her attention.
"I wonder what's in here," I say, taking It upon myself to tear into the paper because it's clear she's too interested in talking to Peppa Pig.
Baby's first walker.
"Oh, amazing, Jay. This couldn't be more perfect now she's wanting to walk on her own more," I say, leaning forward to wrap my fingers around his neck to pull him in for a quick kiss.
It lingers.
And as we pull back, he surprises me with a few more.
He settles back into his position. "I wish I could've spoilt her more, but money's a bit tight this month."
I grab his hand that's starting to shake. "This is more than enough. You didn't have to get her anything. Your love is all she needs."
