...Last night was a strange one. Neither of us could sleep through the fear of the last twelve hours, and that in itself disturbed Emily. Jamie and I took it in turns to go in and check on her, not wanting to rely on the baby monitor incase we missed something important.
Our minds on overdrive, we simply laid in the quiet of the night with Jamie holding me tighter than he ever had. I love you.
And now, after an emergency appointment at the doctors, we're walking down the promenade in the hopes of the sea air waking us up a little bit. Jamie is in control of the push chair up front with Matt, while Yasmin links her arm with mine.
"So, the doctor is pretty certain about it being a food allergy?" she says as she bumps our shoulders together.
I stare across the railing towards the dog chasing a tennis ball across the beach. "Yeah, she's booked in for blood tests tomorrow."
"Are you relived? At least now you have a handle on things," she says, giving me a small smile when I turn my head back to look at her.
If anything, it scares me more. The thought of her accidentally eating something that's going to send her immune system into shock. It's petrifying. "I don't know to be honest. It's all so new to me."
She nods. "No, yeah, I get it. It's nice to see her brighter this morning. The way she chased Matty all over the house with her baby walker totally burst my ovaries."
I giggle. "It was flipping cute, wasn't it? The way she shouted at him too."
We both smile when our men turn their heads at the same time to check we're still behind them. Yasmin whispers, "I just want to be pregnant already. It's in his blood."
I want that for them too. More than anything. "You will be. It just takes time. The more you practise, the luckier you'll get."
"Like we need any encouragement. I can't get enough of him. God, he's so gorgeous," she sighs, definitely checking out his arse.
I laugh, noticing the tall woman with curly red hair running over here. "Sounds like you have it down then."
"Jamie!"
Yasmin's grip tightens to the point of it hurting before she yells, "Oh, hell no."
Jamie comes to an automatic stop in front of the now standing woman who's panting like she just ran a damn marathon. "Turn around," he growls.
My heckles rise in an instant.
"Jay, oh, baby, it's been so long," she replies, paying no mind to his angry stance.
Baby.
This time Matt speaks up. "Catherine. You need to walk away."
"Catherine," comes out of my mouth.
She gets a good look at me through the gap between the men, and it annoys me how beautiful she is. Like girl next door meets Kate Middleton beauty. "That's my name, don't wear it out."
Jamie steps back to spin the pushchair around so he's facing me. "We're going home."
I nod. "Okay."
Catherine reaches her hand out to trap his shoulder between her fingers. "Just wait a second. I'm glad that I saw you out. You never answer my texts."
"Of course I don't answer your texts. We're over," he replies, eyes wild on me for back up.
I step forward. "Take your hands off him."
She lifts an eyebrow. "Excuse me."
I love how she thinks she's intimidating me. I've dealt with people like her for most of my life. They're nothing but cowards.
