hanamaki takahiro was your average guy. he was tall, liked making dirty jokes, and played sports (mostly just volleyball). well, you know that cliche where girls change their look for their crush? this kid did the same.

after meeting matsukawa issei, who is said to like unique people, takahiro fell in love at first sight. upon hearing that he liked unique people, he dyed his hair pink, got a few piercings, and became even more of a jokester.

the first time they met was their first volleyball meeting at their new school, aoba johsai. takahiro didn't stand out that much. he was just there because his mother wanted him to be active and volleyball was the only sport he liked. on the other hand, issei was the friendliest person he knew and loved to joke around. he had quite a few friends even though they'd only been at school for a few weeks. takahiro only had two friends.

although issei loved joking around, he was still very focused on volleyball and worked harder than you would think. but, the best players out of the first years were still oikawa and iwaizumi. no one could disagree, especially about oikawa. dispite only being a first year, oikawa worked extremely hard, maybe harder than the third years. takahiro could respect all three of them for their hard work since he didn't always try his best at volleyball.

at their first volleyball meet, takahiro was warming up when a ball almost hit him, but issei saved him by grabbing the ball in time. since (at the time) takahiro was a few inches shorter, he looked up to issei and thought that he looked cool. "you good?" issei spoke. "oh y-yeah... thanks," takahiro replied.

a few days went on and eventually, takahiro started hearing rumors about issei's type. but, he did know that these were true since issei sat behind him in homeroom and he overheard issei's conversations with his friends. so, that weekend, we decided to dye his hair pink and get a few piercings.

the next day that they had school, he shows up and some 'woah's and 'who's he' went around the classroom. before fully walking into the classroom, a teacher caught him and yelled at him, but takahiro only pretended to listen. then, as always, he walked to his desk in front of matsukawa issei's.

he stared out the window, anxious for what issei's reaction would be. then, he got a tap on the shoulder from behind. it was issei! "i think you're sitting in the wrong seat," he says. "oh no, i'm actually not! i'm hanamaki takahiro! the person who sits in front of you!" takahiro said with a smile. "oh, didn't realize you could be this flashy," issei grins. "yeah," takahiro starts loudly and ends in a whisper, "well i did it for you!" "what?" issei asks, and takahiro replies with a cute "oh nothing!"

from that day on, they started talking more and because of takahiro's flashy appearance, issei realized that takahiro was in the volleyball team. so, issei finally had a friend in his volleyball team. they loved to joke around and hang out at the arcade after school on days they didn't have practice or days that they didn't have a lot of homework.

a few months later, after becoming regulars (although they still stood in the side for the most part) and winning their first tournament at aoba johsai, takahiro decided to confess to issei.

it was after their first practice after the tournament (when they were walking home). they were at the park tossing to each other, since they lived in the same direction.

"hey matsukawa," takahiro began, "the first day that i came in with my new hair and piercings, you know how i said something and you asked what i said?"
"yeah?"
"what i said... was that i..."
"what?"
"yeah i'm getting to it! i uhh said that the reason i dyed my hair and everything... was... for you."
"what?! i couldn't hear you! you got too quiet!"
"OMG! I SAID THAT I DYED MY HAIR FOR YOU!!"
"what?!"
"do you want me to repeat it again?!"
"no no i understood what you said... but why?"
"guess"
"uhh you want my attention?"
"yeah and why would i want that?"
"you want to be friends with me?"
"no! you idiot! i fucking like you!"
"what?"
"i've liked you since our first volleyball meet! it was love at first sight."
"woah what?!"
"yeah i like you. i love you."
"..."
"what?"
"i... don't know what to say."

takahiro's confession left issei in a very confused state. "you don't have to give me an answer," takahiro said, tossing the volleyball to issei, which issei didn't bother catching, and leaving.

the next few days were full of issei blankly staring at takahiro and pretty much silence between them. during practice, iwaizumi and oikawa, who takahiro and issei have been friends with for awhile now, walked up to takahiro and asked if something happened between him and issei. takahiro answered bluntly "i guess... i just confessed to him". "you did?!" oikawa yelled and it ended up echoing throughout the gym for everyone to hear, so they talked outside.

takahiro and oikawa kept talking about crushes and confessing for a good half hour and the whole time, iwaizumi couldn't follow (which i guess was a good thing because little did he know that oikawa has a crush on him). they literally gossiped. "how did you do it? also when did you start liking him?!" oikawa gleefully asked takahiro. "it was at first sight during our first volleyball meet. and i just told him on the way home," takahiro told him. "oh my god! that's cute!" oikawa yet again yells.

while talking, issei peeks his head out the gym door to see what they were talking about. "hey hanamaki, can i talk to you for a bit?" issei calls takahiro over. "oooo," oikawa says, "good luck!"

"what was that about?" issei asks takahiro when he gets back in the gym to talk to issei. "nothing much," takahiro replies, "what's up?"
"it's about my answer to your confession."
"oh ok."
"would you go out with me?"
"what?"
"i'd like to date."
"seriously?"
"yeah! i want to homosexual with you."
"lol ok... but are you sure?"
"yeah. i think i like you too!"
"okay. expect a lot of memes in your text messages."
"lol same for me."
"wow love you already."
"thanks! me too."

"hA gAyYy!" oikawa yells from behind the door of the gym. takahiro and issei's focus turns to oikawa and takahiro turns a shade darker than his hair. he runs after oikawa until practice is over. "OIKAWA!!!" takahiro yells.

"...so you guys are dating now," iwaizumi asks issei. "uhh yeah!" he replies.

... and that's how they started dating! issei felt very tempted to tell iwaizumi that oikawa liked him, but he didn't. issei and takahiro staring to date did spark the story of how oikawa and iwaizumi started to date, but that story's for another time.
