I ride down the street stopping at the corner when my house comes into view. I sigh and get off my board slowly walking home. I get to the front door and just stand there not ready to face what's going to happen when I get inside. I find my key and open the door slowly trying to be as quiet as I possibly can.

"Where have you been!"

Fuck. So close. I look up and see my mother sitting on the steps.

"Mom can we please not do this right now?"

"I don't know who the hell you think you're talking to. Kennedy, you left school, and you were gone for hours! What if something happened?"

"Mom nothing happened okay! I'm home safe and I don't want to talk anymore."

"You don't get to decide when we talk. I'm just really sick and tired of you and this attitude. Do you think disappearing for hours at a time and skipping school is acceptable? You're grounded for the rest of the week. School, home, and that's it."

Mom gets up and walks into the kitchen. I just shake my head and make my head to my room.

"Kennedy!"

I stop in front of my door and look up to see Maverick coming out of his room.

"What do you want?" I ask.

"Well hello to you too."

"Do you actually want something or are you just being an asshole like usual?"

"Damn dude who pissed in your Cheerios!"

I roll my eyes and walk into my room closing the door in Mave's face. I lock the door and start taking my clothes off. I look into the mirror like I always do. My boxers sit on my hips that are too wide and my binder compresses my chest but not enough. I hate looking in the mirror but I'm kind of addicted to it. I take my hair out of the bennie I shove it in every day and it falls to the middle of my back. I groan and just leave it alone. The only thing I want is to cut it but my parents said no. I find one of my oversized hoodies and a pair of sweatpants and lay on my bed. I scroll through YouTube watching video after video of FtM trans guys starting their medical transition. There's a knock on my door and I know it's Juliana because she's the only one that knocks. I unlock the door and let Julie come in. She pushes her way through the door and locks it behind her.

"What the fuck?" I ask.

"Show me." Julie says.

I can tell by the look on her face she isn't happy.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Come Nik I'm not stupid. I came in here yesterday to borrow that yellow hoodie-"

"I told you to stay out of my shit!"

"I saw the stains on it."

I shake my head at her and lay on my bed. I look up at the ceiling wishing the world would just swallow me whole. I feel the bed dip and feel Julie's hands on my head. She moves my head to her lap and starts running her fingers through my hair making me relax.

"Nik, why don't you talk to me?"

"I do talk to you."

"No you don't, you don't even talk to Oakley. You tell us what you want us to know. When you're struggling with stuff we want to know about that too Nik."

Before I can say anything someone is banging on my door, "Kennedy! Juliana! Dinner!" Maverick yells.

I sit up and put my hands over my face. Dinner doesn't start until everyone is home. The last person I want to see right now is my Dad. Julie stands up and looks at me before leaving my room. I know she's disappointed in me but I'm a disappointment so it is what it is. I take my time making my way downstairs. Everyone is already at the table. Mave is going on about his upcoming football game with Dad. Mom is talking about soccer with Juliana. I just push my food around on my plate. They're the perfect kids and I can't even get my shit together.
